old syst as follows...

antec 300 ultimate gaming case

intel, i5 750 2.66ghz o/c to 4.00ghz

asus mobo

8gb corsair 1600

ati radeon hd 5850 1024mb gddr5

ocz stealth x stream 700w

h/d caviar black 500gb

all built in 2010.

what is the best up grade path please.
cost, £500 to £800 not even 50p over please, it does not have to be the dogs bits, just a good one.

thank you guys, love you all.....

ps. bin out of the game so long i dont know what goes with what.

You'd gain a massive boost just getting a new gpu would be the lowest cost upgrade.
An i5 750 @ 4-4.2 ghz still holds it's own today will certainly be enough for 1080p with a 280x or above..

Otherwise i'd go with this as a base don't go for anything other than a 5820k x99 setup if you got £800, you can keep your case and possibly keep psu and if you buy a secondhand gpu that frees up more for a new psu and possibly case.

You are better off buying a second hand graphics card with warranty left on it like a 280x 290x 780ti etc.

yea was about to amend it quite a few 5820k bundles around make sure you get a 5820k and x99 + 4 sticks ram as the base

Does he need a 5820? Maybe a 4790k would be cheaper and offer the same performance in gaming. More money for a gpu then

Either i5 or 5820k I feel, why go 4790k? Too close to 5820k in price to be worth it.

Having said that, an i5 750 clocked up well is still OK, I'd just grab a new graphics card, whack an SSD in and get on with playing games :)

I still game with a I7 950 @ 4ghz with a after market cooler and it does great. got a older GPU in my system too (radeon 5830) and this run ok at 1080P.

if I was you I would get a decent cooler if you don't have one already and do some OC, replace the GPU and get a SSD if you don't have 1.

thank you guys.
would you say that my cpu clocked at 4g is ok then, and you think going from 8g of ram to16g is worth it.
is a ssd drive worth it? and why not a 500g one?
and what gpu is the best choice for my cpu?

thanks guys.
simmo

ps. need a new cpu cooler not happy with old one, air not water please.

just upgrading your gpu will get you a massive boost in games if you want a solid cheap as chips upgrade then a secondhand 7950/7970 280x or better would bump you to 60 fps +highest details in most games at 1080p, 3gb or more vram ideally a 4gb vram card but those are pricey.

16gb ram is still not needed for gaming 8gb is still good.

A ssd is very worth it even if just a 64gb one for the operating system and a game or two, depends how many games you play on a regular basis.
I can afford a new ssd but I still roll with a crucial m4 64gb because i only play coh 1 & arma 3 daily. All my occasional games go on the wd black.

You only get sata 2 speeds on p55 chipset (280mb sec) but it's still fast enough compared to 500mb sec ish on sata 3 unless you have a decent onboard sata 3 (most of them are worse than the sata 2 port speed).

So grabbing a ssd and better gpu would give you a very nice boost.

I am running GTA V, Elite Dangerous, BF4 all at 1080p on high detail on my i7 920 @ 3.5ghz with a gtx970, so your base system is fine.. i would go for an SSD and a GPU..listed a couple below, but you can pick your favourite brand.. and just check which ever gpu you pick fits your case.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N970WF3OC-4GD) £257.99
1 x Crucial BX100 500GB SSD SATA 6Gbps 7mm Solid State Drive (CT500BX100SSD1) £139.99
Total : £407.58 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

thank you all guys,

i think i will go with a new card and ssd, as it will still be good if i up garde cpu etc later on.

what about , r9 300 cards? they are cheaper but arnt they any good?
in the past i used amd cards and liked them, remember the 9700pro etc
arnt amd any good now?
as for the ssd it will be going on to a, asus p7p55d-e lx, m/b, is this ok? apart from a caddy will i need any thing else.

thanks all.

Get yourself a SSD and GPU now - I suggest the GTX 970 - and review the situation when Skylake has matured a bit.

ive always bought NVidia so cant comment. your mobo is fine, you just need to decide whether to do a fresh install of windows on the SSD, I strongly recommend you do.. the performance with windows and general system performance is well worth it on ssd, plus you will have plenty of space left for games. or if you don't want to spend much get a 250gb for os and favourite games and stuff the rest on the Standad HDD

and if you want to pretend you have a new pc , but haven't you could treat it to a new case ;) I think the cable management in the antec 300 Is a bit limited

I would say a 290(x) or 390(x) would be a good choice, except I would worry about how the PSU would cope considering its 5 years+ old and I think the OEM is FPS, which are OKish, but not a top tier manufacturer.

I support the 970 + SSD idea. I think it will be a huge boost for little money, maybe build again from scratch in 2 or 3 years.
