GTX 970 or R9 390

It should handle some games, although i'd go Xfire 290's or 980Ti/Fury if I wanted a solid 60 or even 144Hz

Thanks for your reply. Im hoping the 390 card gets put up on sale soon as Gibbo suggested a week a go - but I also would need to buy a 1440 monitor, at the moment I cant afford the £550 for the 980ti AND then whatever £ a good 1440p monitor is.

The 970 is pretty good but i think the 290 has more real muscle, for smoothness it depends, there are instances where it does feel a bit more fluid than the 290 but there are also instances where the 970 micro-stutters, its hitching a little.
neither one of them are completely faultless, 'Nothing is' they are different and behave differently in different situations.

They are both great cards, really, personally the one i would recommend is a good 390, like the MSI 390 Gaming. but both cards are equally good.

I forgot about driver overheads being improved recently. Lets hope it keeps improving further down the line.

If it's a non issue with the CPU the 390 what id get.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated. I'm going to go with the 390, given that the drivers have improved and the 8gb of ram is there if I decide to go 1440 at a later date, it feels like the right choice.

Cheers,
Sombaht

It's not if there'll be a need for 8Gb though is it, between these two cards it's if there'll be a need for more than 4Gb.

You might never get near 8Gb, but 4.5Gb or 5Gb may well be usefull soon.
