I made a PC out of old spares

I've made a PC out of old bits and bobs that I've upgraded from various computers over the last few years and I've built it up for my brother, he's only 13 and he's got an Xbox one for his gaming, but wanted something just to do homework on and browse the net, this would be ideal for him without my parents having to buy anything.

Its my old Xenta case, nothing special but its modern looking. The motherboard is an old Gigabyte (not sure of model) but its a full size board. I've put it into the case, connected all the front connectors to MB, the PSU is an old Zoostorm (one i got with a pc around 6 months ago) its 300W which should be more than enough. I've got an old 500GB 7200RPM hard drive and a disk drive.

Plugged it all in, fans on CPU spin up for around 5 seconds then it shuts off.. no idea why, i've done some troubleshooting but can't work the thing out;

Things i've tried..

- Tried a different 24pin PSU and it does the same.
- Tried re-seating the CPU fans with fresh arctic silver.
- Tried keeping hold of power button (just incase it was shorting out)
- Tried using only 1 ram stick (i'm using two and ive tried both on their own)

What do i do now?:mad:

What are the specs?

Throw the PSU in the bin for starters, I wouldn't even want to run a Pentium 4 off of something with a Zoostorm label on it!

Have you checked that all of the parts are compatible? Some old socket 775 motherboards don't support newer socket 775 CPU's for example.

Tried re-setting the CMOS? (with the CMOS jumper, or by removing the CMOS battery)

Failing that, have you tried setting it up outside of the case in case something is shorting somewhere?

Have installed stand-offs between the case and motherboard?

is the 4 pin CPU power connector in?

Any beep codes from the internal speaker?

I wouldn't trust that PSU at all.

Yeah stand offs are installed, the MB is mounted on them.

Yeah, 4 pin is connected.

No beeps or anything

The PSU is what i suspected first, however the fact i've another laying around that does the same, means i could well rule out the PSU being at fault.

take out the battery, disconnect the PC from the mains then hold down the power button for 30 seconds to make sure all power is drained from the system.

wait about 30 mins or so and put the battery back in and try again

have you tried the on board GPU or a PCI one?

if using a PCI Express try on board and if its on board try a PCI Express one if you have a spare laying about

try just the mb, cpu and 1 stick of ram outside the case.

start by shorting the two mb power pins with a screwdriver.

The thing is i can't get the computer to actually POST. I've currently got the motherboard on a old Corsair PSU box, with 1 RAM stick and CPU connected and of course the PSU connected, the CPU fan spins up for about 5 seconds then it just turns off again.

There's been a development, a rather weird development.

When i take out the 4pin CPU chip, the computer stays on, when i plug that in, it turns off. The screen is black though presumably because the CPU isnt getting power.

What could cause this?

you need cpu power, all mb's do that when you unplug the 4 or 8 pin cpu plug

its looping because there's an incompatibility somewhere, component ect

I;m not sure what that incompatibility is then, the board is a 775 socket and its got a 775 CPU in it, the CPU is the same CPU that it had in it when i last had it running. It only has the front case wires into the MB aswel as 24pin and 4pin and 1 stick of ram.

Could it be a sign the MB is dead?

What is the motherboard model? It should be stamped on the board, something like GA-P35-DS3R. What is the CPU too?

I've got an Intel E6300 (don't know if its a good overclocker) and some 2x 512mb hynix PC2-5300 I could send you if you cover the postage if you need any spare parts to try :D
