Hi guys,

I've been planning my upgrade for a while now, coming from an 8350 system.

Due to the disappointment of Skylake I'm planning an X99 system which will actually be cheaper to build, but wanted some opinions and input on anything I need to consider regarding X99 (my build is mATX).

So I'm planning on buying the following bundle which is really well priced:

- CPU: Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X99M Gaming 5 (Socket 2011-3) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard

which is £414.

With regards to memory, I'm going with 16gb of DDR4 2400 MHz Kingston HyperX Fury. This kit comes in both 4x4Gb and 2x8Gb configs. Is there any benefit with going 4x4 for quad channel? 2x8 would allow an upgrade to 32gb if I should so wish in the future I guess - plus it's cheaper.

Another question I have is regarding PSUs. My current PSU is a BeQuiet PurePower 600w 80+ Bronze. Will this be enough to power a 5820k + single 970?

I also have an older (2010) Cooler Master cx650w power supply, would that be a better choice?

Are there any other considerations I should have with building an x99 system? Are there are quirks or caveats with this series I should be aware of?
Anyone think I should go with Skylake instead?

All thoughts appreciated.

Your PSU Would be more than enough. Dual Channel over Quad Channel will not be noticeable unless you do benchmarks so might be worth considering the Dual Channel kit if your intent on upgrading in the future.

Tbh looking at reviews I may even go 6600k as it looks a really good chip for the price, £185 at some sources.

For X99 you are meant to run RAM in quad channel, which is why it has 8 ram slots, you either use 4 or all 8 :p

What will be the main use of your computer? Nothing wrong with a 8350 at all, which graphics card do you have?

Anyone got any thoughts on PSU use?

600w BeQuet 80+ bronze (used from Dec 2013)

or

650w CoolerMaster CX series PSU, bought in Sept. 2010 but not used that much.

Both are non-modular and have had no issues with either. I haven't used the CM since I built my new PC with the BeQuiet PSU in 2013/14, should I just carry on with the BeQuiet? Does it matter?

Isn't x99 a quad channel memory set up?

Nothing stopping you running only 2 sticks though (or even a single stick), realistically outside of synthetic benchmarks it probably will make next to no difference (same as running a single stick rather than dual channel on normal builds).
