oh I do like to be beside the seaside
I've sold my car on eBay.

Its SORN'd and no MOT.

The buyer is coming up by train to pick it up and drive it off.

Could I be in trouble once he takes it away, or is it all his problems?

You can sign the V5 over to him, and then it's his. What he does then is his problem I'd have thought surely? he should be towing it or whatever... if he gets stopped it'll be his problem as he'll hae the V5 in his pocket as a new owner. The second thing is, he won't be insured on it either i'd have thought.

Well the SORN isn't an issue. Under the new system, the tax would be gone the moment you sign it over anyway.

I don't think it's your problem to be honest. What he should do is arrange a booked MOT before picking it up. He's allowed to drive it to that MOT despite having no current MOT. Although he can't tax it until it's MOTed. Can you drive to an MOT with no tax also? Not as sure about that, but it seems sensible that you must be able to.

Not your problem after sale. Guess if he did get pulled over he will have proof that he only just bought it however if the car is SORN can it be insured?

Make sure your insurance is cancelled.

There was a recent case when somebody sold a motorbike & didn't cancel the insurance until the following week, by that time the new OWNER had crashed without insurance. The 3rd party claimed against the old (still active) insurance & won .

Not sure it'd do any good, but I'd sign and date/time a receipt for each of you and ask him to sign and date/time it too. At least then you have something if he does something he shouldn't.

If they book it in for an MOT and pay the tax there and then there shouldn't be any issues.

You can't tax it without an MOT so thats not necessary.

Providing he has insurance and is taking it straight to a pre booked MOT it is totally fine. The distance of the MOT test station isn't defined so he can get away with taking it to his local station.

Even if he is bending the rules as long as you have a signed v5 in your hands you have no responsibility so you can freely leave him to it.

The seller keeps the V5 and fills it in with the buyer's details and sends it to DVLA and gives the new owner a slip.

You can also do it online and keep (destroy) the V5:
