Every day at work i like to try and arrive 15 minutes or so early to get myself a cup of tea/coffee and prepare for the day ahead.

recently though it appears the management feel it is ok not to arive late thermselves and i end up opening the depot and getting everything switched on etc when i arrive. By the time this is done the place has opened and I don't have a chance to sort out myself

ive sat down now during my lunch hour and worked out that 15 minutes per day, 5 days a week, for 32 weeks, minus any days off holiday. i have effectly worked 35 hours of unpaid overtime to date this year.

i have mentioned this to my manager and he has shrugged it off saying everyone has to do it and he does loads etc etc.

am i being petty for complaining about this?

i wouldnt mind if it was on odd occasions but its not and i have worked almost a week extra for free.

just refuse to switch on and open the depot.

wait for management, if they complain it's not your job.

just don't expect a promotion any time soon

Yes your being petty...

Your early by 15 mins to make a brew and get ready for work. So not actually working.

We used to run a pub and staff would walk through the door at the time they were meant to start their shift. Only to then go upstairs put their shirts on and eventually get behind the bar.

Give it a week where you turn up bang on time and have things open up late.

Another option could be to give the keys back so you can't open up.

In thinking about it though, now that you've mentioned it, they might get ****** with you if you start coming in later as you've set a precedent and highlighted it. Obviously they have no legitimate way of penalising you for that, but we all know it doesn't stop there.

When you reach management level, you can come in late and leave the grunts to open up too.

But in all honesty, it's not that big of a deal... 15 minutes per day is hardly life or death. Come in on time if it bothers you that much... what else can you do, report your own management for being late? How late are they, anyway?

This is petty from management in my eyes. I Used to be 5 mins over the starting time. If this happened I would make time up after 4.30. If I had been early I would not have been paid for it.

I start at 8.30 so I also make a cuppa before this time. I won't do anything else until this time. I finish at 4.30. I will not stop either after this time or even start any jobs that will take longer to do.

Management used to complain about me... not any more!

All I can say is if you complain... watch your back.

That sounds like something I would just do if I was the first one in. Don't really see the problem.

What about the end of the day? Are you the one switching everything off and locking up as well?

If you still want to arrive early, take a flask with tea and sit outside having a drink while you wait.

If you voluntary do this though, only got yourself to blame.

your being petty - there's being professional and being ready to start on time for 9 - you could just turn up 5 mins early to do that. If you want to turn up 15mins early every day then its on your time not theirs.

If you're bothered about it, you should have kept schtum and gone back to arriving on time.

Now you've made a fuss, it will look petty.

It's a good mindset to get their early, get your coffee and get your stuff together before kicking off, I'd applaud that in an employee as it's annoying when people turn up on time or late and spend the first 30 minutes having their breaky and coffee. However if others don't that's just tough luck and having to open a few doors and turn on some power is neither here nor there. I have weeks where I work 30 plus hours over the norm but I suggest my circumstances are different as that can often be from my own office.

You're being petty. Although it's in your own time I bet that you spend more time making/consuming the drink then you do opening up. I'd be doing the same if I was early and first in. I really don't see this as something to raise an issue with.

admittedly no. that is left to another one of the grunts.

since ive started opening up i dont have time to make a brew. so technically i am working. im usually not finished by the time the premises open. its a big site with a lot to do.

I havent complained as such but mentioned it to them. perhaps in some misguided way of getting some recognition for what i do here.

Perhaps im just being silly. just wanted some other peoples perspective of it.
