Reminder to oneself...never,ever buy a Seagate HD again.

3rd failure in 5yrs.

First two were part of pre built systems, like an idiot i bought the 3rd one for a self build.

I'm done with Seagate, I reckon they're only good for 18mths use .

It's still just a case of chance. A whole host of other people have had a whole bunch of Seagates that haven't failed.

There's not even much choice in the market now anyway.

I don't think is matters what brand you buy. But if you don't have a backup solution then your shooting yourself in the foot. I did this myself and learned the hard way.
Got a back up solution now.

I've bee running 2x500GB drives for he past 8 years and they are still going strong. ......... Touches wood while typing.........

I have had 4 failures all on western digital and only one on seagate its luck of the draw in the end.
Making sure you backup data is the key my steam folder is 3TB's in size so makings sure I have a backup is a very good idea unless I want to download that amount again :).

Just buy whatever has decent warranty and back it up. If it fails then RMA it.

I've had equal amounts of Samsung, seagate and WD drives fail on me.

some are worse than others though imo for failure rates

all the drives I own are Samsung and ive never had one fail, some are a good 5-7years old and all second hand

Fully agree with you, Seagate drives are just trash. Low quality junk that simply doesn't last as long as WD drives, used in the same environment.

There have been several articles, including the blackblaze one, that confirm this - really high failure rates compared to WD.
.

im not keen on modern seagates either, old ones 5 years ago are still going well

Yup - some of my oldest Seagates (and I've been through a lot over the years) are still running strong - but lately they are trash - had more fail in the year after the 7200.11s were released than in the ~15 years or whatever of using them before that (think I had like 1 fail in that time) and avoided them lately. Sad as I used to be a big Seagate fanboy.

I had a friend who had all of his 3TB seagates fail, he was using them in a NAS so not ideal but still all four died within 24Months he sold the RMA replacements and went WD.

I have been running 8 of the 4TB Seagate nas drives for over a year without incident.

I really think all this intelipower head parking every few seconds nonscence seems to kill drives sharpish.

Yes my Seagate (3GB) HDD has just died this lunch time. The bits on that drive are lost forever :(

There were some documents on there (which I will have to search for now to see if I have copies).

My fault for not having a back up system in place :(

I'm purchasing 2 Hitachi drives now. Backing up starting from tonight.

I still have a 4 year old 500gb sg drive rattling around in a barebone/testing build
Named it "the little drive that could" I'm suprised it didn't conk out already

You should give those external storage drives a throw, they are more affordable than ever and where as years ago you had that whomping horrible external cage with the panel to hook them up, its simply a usb cable now.. even know 1/2 people using them in their cars :) Actually picked up another one last week
