I've got an Admiral(maytag group) American style fridge freezer.
It's around 7 years old now and is going to cost around £500 to repair.

As I live in Cumbria, any independent repair companies don't want to travel that far, so I'm stuck with Maytag themselves, who's callout charge is rather large.

So I'm thinking of replacing it with new. The trouble is it's built like a tank compared to anything we've seen in Curry's....LG, samsung, etc.

Does anyone know of any other premium brands I could look at, that isn't as obscure as Admiral/Maytag (Which is great, apart from it's broken), so I could get a future repair up north.

How much!

Korean refrigeration is good stuff.

Bosch Neff and Siemens is one and he same, ythe same product in a different dress.

It is also not the same quality as it used to be.

I would buy a Samsung, not a twin cooler though.

Ours is a Samsung. 8yrs old and only had engineer out once when a blockage caused it to ice up. I'd offer it up for sale as we are moving but shipping woukd be too expensive and I quite like it.

I have a samsung.

It's still going strong after 4 years. You can spend a fortune on some of the high-end brands, but I couldn't justify the extra.

If I were to buy another, I would probably go for split top/bottom i.e. something like this

The two door left/right style aren't actually very practical, and it's amazing just how little you can fit inside.

Or, if you have room, get a separate larder fridge and chest freezer.

Really liked the idea of an american fridge freezer mainly due to size.

Will most likely go for a set of single fridge and single freezer as you get slightly more space plus there's two motors so should last longer.

premium brands? so if you want really to get a quality fridge / Freezer you are going to have to pay proper money.

SubZero, Viking, Miele Master cool range or Gaggenau

Also Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart 36 is not bad.

I bought a Bosch from ao about 7 months ago, been working a treat since I got it. I checked which? First and it was the only recommended American fridge freezer at the time

Hi OldCoals,

I know you know your stuff as an appliance engineer, and i was wondering why you call the "twin cooler" models out?

Reason being....ive just bought one! :p

It looks jazzy and has the features i wanted, i just hope it works ok.

My inlaws have an Admiral and it's absolutely terrible - no end of issues with it. They were looking at Bosch.

Also (and sorry to hijack thread but as Oldcoals is here) - in your experience which is better brand of fridge, AEG or Bosch please? Trying to get a larder fridge.

Bosch really isn't what it used to be, you have to spend top dollar now to get the Bosch of old.

Their cheaper dishwashers for example have a bonded steel/plastic tub, you can guess what happens there.

AEG. Zanussi and Electrolux are one and the same, AEG being the premium brand.

Gorenje make some really good quality kit, most of it comes with a 5 year warranty.
