Hey everyone,

So - usually when buying shoes for the office to wear with a suit, I stick to slip-ons (just too lazy to work them laces every morning) and buy something around the £40ish price range.

Is this too cheap skate an approach? How much should I be dropping on buying a decent pair of shoes. And what is the benefit of purchasing a higher class of footwear?

Thanks

Spend what you feel comfortable with.
Care not what others think.
you're unlikely to get a raise or promotion because your wearing expensive shoes.

Obviously if you are supposed to be impressing clients then it could be different.

as some on ocuk have shown they will judge you for wearing white socks

A good shoe helps you stand out from the crowd of others who simply don't care. It's an indication that you pay attention to the less obvious things. Most men don't seem to notice. But when I wear nicer shoes it's the women that tend to comment positively too.

For me, shoes are just one part of the overall package. But they are an important one.

Dress for the job you want rather than the job you have.

I got some slip on ones from M&S and worn them to a Wedding and Interviews and no one spat on me so I assume I got away with it? GF is fairly fashion conscious and hasn't told me off either.

More expensive shoes generally look nicer, they feel better too, and depending on what brand can last longer. So rather than buying 2 pairs of 50 quid shoes during a time period, the 100 quid pair might last longer.

Nothing worse than those plastic leather looking shoes.

Ultimately though just buy what you're happy with and can afford.

Or it just make you look like a pretentious ****.

Dress for the job you want rather than the job you have.

So if you want to be the chief office **** licker, buy nice shoes?

There is a theory of multiple cheap shoes, lets you air one pair whilst wearing the others, rather than filling the same shoes with sweat daily.

Personally i care not, i'd much rather wear what is comfortable rather than have flashy shoes spoilt by hobbling around in pain.

A good shoe only matters to people who appreciate good shoes. A clean well maintained shoe is far more important in business, one of the first thing I look at when I interview people. Not a deal breaker but part of the first impression and an indicator to how people prepare.

Nobody will care if your shoes cost £40 or £400 unless they're bizarrely preoccupied with the cover of the book and not the contents. That said, they at least ought to be presentable and clean.

A pair of freshly polished unscuffed £40 shoes will create a better impression than a £400 pair that are scuffed to buggery with mud stains up the side.

Don't overthink it.

use parade gloss everyday and get your shoes reflective like a mirror.

you can't buy class and they will stand out more than some £1000 shoes

Few people seem to look after their shoes these days. There's little substitute for a day's rest between wearing a pair, and caring for them with proper polish once a week to maintain their condition. If, and that's a big if, anyone does pay any attention to their office shoes today it is normally with some crappy silicon cleaner that gives a quick shine and does nothing for the leather.

Gone are the days of parade gloss, spit and polish.

Entirely depends on your job and if you're customer facing. If you're customer facing and dealing with big contracts, a decent set of polished shoes are definitely the best bet. If you're walking around the office with only your colleagues around anything will likely do.

TK max

Expensive shoes are more than likely to fall apart than crap ones in my experience. But shoes are like woman, you need to try lots of pairs on then you get one that just fits. (Then it goes all saggy, laces become so loose a knot cant hold and they just end up feeling wrong) :D

i wear the same shoes as the cleaners and the same shoes as the manager of the whole place, toe capped boots :D
