Btw if you buy from the purple place again they are currently trying to get all customers to pay £40 odd to update the laptop to Windows 10 for you.

All the stock still comes with Windows 8.1 installed but all the demo models are running Win 10.

Bit cheeky really as you don't see the product you are buying in a way.

For general home use just get something with an i3 and 4GB or more memory, can get something nice for around the £350 mark.

Thats not actually that much of a con, as your paying for their time more than anything.

If you phoned up your local IT guy to come and do it he would charge you an hours labour which would be about £40.

People saying get a cheap laptop, please don't. Every i3 pos laptop I've had the pleasure to use has ended up running like crap after a few months.

I don't know what it is with cheap laptops that they seem to run so badly.

Get a cheap laptop, and put a cheap SSD in it.
Mechanical hard-drives need to die out as OS drives.

Even the cheapest I3, with enough memory and Windows 8.1/10 will fly on an SSD. And if it slows over time, this is due to the user, not the laptop.

OP's laptop is 7-8 years old. Any new £250 i3+SSD laptop is going to feel like a huge upgrade.

Go to Tesco.
Spend £250 quid on any generic i3.
Feel like you are living in the future.

Especially when they are actually charging only £20 to do the upgrade for you.

If she doesn't do much with it, maybe consider getting a decent tablet.

Much easier for her to take everywhere thanks to the weight, and pretty simple to learn.

It does everything she needs to do.
