Am i justified in my complaint or being petty?

If you're happy that you're never going to look for promotion then just turn up on time, not early.

If however you want to be paid more than you are being paid, do more than you're being paid to do.

That certainly does not happen in every job. A lot of people have jobs, and not careers. What your job is is where you will stay, no matter how much extra work you put in.

But surely it will still be helpful when you are looking to move to a career? You can show initiative/desire to go beyond what you are just required to do etc. Even if this employer doesn't appreciate it, a future one would and you have a history of demonstrating that.

A lot of people here have careers, a considerable number more just have a job. Going in early, going above and beyond etc usually makes zero difference.

I think it depends on the management in question tbh. One of my team came in an hour early on Friday to get some PC moves done before the affected staff started. I let him leave early to make up for it, and it's something I'll remember in the future.

EXACTLY.

Ive done things like that in the past yet get no recognition for it. to me its the small things that matter. but it feels like its all take, take, take.

Do you work closely with your management though? Are they obviously aware of what you do? With the team I manage (3 guys), we're all sat together in the same room so I'm acutely aware of what work they're doing and what they're not. I know they spend some time surfing Facebook or BBC Sport. I don't particularly care about that, as I know that when there is work to be done, it'll get done. If I was in a different room to them and didn't work directly with them, I wouldn't be aware of any extra work they may do unless they specifically told me.

There's a big difference between a small team that is close to their managers, and a bigger company where you're just another cog, and the manger is stuck between the demands of his superiors and looking after his team (assuming he's not a selfish dick only out for himself).

Oh no doubt, that's why I asked the question. Even in large companies though you usually have a line manager who should work relatively close with you and be aware of what you're doing. That's the person who should be aware of the extra work you do, and feeding that information upwards if the situation warrants it.

If a coffee on a morning is important to you...take a flask? :p

Seriously though,I work in a thermo-forming factory and we run 24 hours a day 363 days a year. I work 7-7 alternate shifts and we basically play relay with the next guy so I actually start at 6.45 and sometimes dont get finished until 6.55. Thats an extra 10 minutes extra I work unpaid but if we are more than 15 minutes late we lose an hours pay. Just one of those things isnt it and sometimes you have to suck it up. Not the best job in the world but pay is good

Tbh I'm left to my own devices as the manager has no clue as to what is involves in my department. He certainly couldn't do it
