Insurance quotes are a joke. What am I doing wrong?

I want my wife and I insured on our 1.4 petrol Peugeot 207 (such a dire car :( ).

We live in the suburbs of Leeds and crime is generally low in our area.

I am the main driver, I have 7 years no claims bonus and we have no accidents to declare.

Despite this (you would think favourable) criteria we're getting quoted £450 - £500.

What's going on? It's like I'm 18 again.

I'm aware engine size does not equal premium cost. But it's annoying since I can insure a 3.5 L V6 for almost the same price.

There seems to be a Base rate in soke areas

like mine.
my clio 172 with a 2.0L engine is £431.
Brand new 208 gtI 1.6T is £448.

Just all seem to be around that area.

Might be the same for you.

The engine size isn't the be all and end all of insurance quotes. I don't think your quote sounds bad for two people in the hole that is Leeds ;)

Have you tried isolating the issue, for example is it more reasonable if just you are insured, or just the wife? Tried quotes for you as main driver and the wife a named driver, and vice versa?

Being creative with job titles may shave a few quid off to, presumably you've tried that?

Ages? Any convictions?

Wish to swap insurance quotes?

Might just be that since the 207 is generally popular with starter/young drivers cars they have a high recorded number of instances of them being damaged, pushing the insurance for all owners up.

When age was taken out of the equation I found engine size irrelevant. common cheap starter cars maintained a higher insurance cost.

Might be the car that attracts "yoof" attention? Or there's a record of those cars having high claims?

Have you tried putting a family member/wife/girlfriend on the policy - I did that for me and it brought it down by over £150!

It's crazy that my 350Z in London with a shed load of mods is less than your quote!

I'd hunt around more, don't use price comparison websites, and hunt hunt hunt. It's laborious and time consuming but sometimes that's all you have to do.

I use this to tweak my quote by changing my job title enough that it is still valid, but actually reduced my quote a further £47!

Also have you looked a compulsory and voluntary excesses? Legal cover, hire car etc... they may add to the cost and you could have them removed if you don't need them (apart from compulsory cover of course).

If it inflates greatly by adding her I'm guessing either she hasn't had a license very long or has points and or an accident?

As above if you're not sure adding her on is causing the issue try the quote with and without, add another older driver etc

When it's for a 207 1.4?

Mine is just over half that on a 530d!

To be fair, you don't live in the crime ridden hole that it appears insurers view Leeds to be and the fact he says he can insure a 3.5v8 for almost the same price seems to confirm its the area as opposed to the car itself.

The whole insurance industry seems a complete joke though, yes, I'm in full agreement.

I'm trying to get my 530i down to ~ £300 for my next renewal, it's proving damn near impossible, quite sad when it's 15yesrs old, I have 11yrs ncb and am a 44 yr old professional driver, especially given I can get very near that figure for a V12 e38 and e65 and an e39 M5 of the same age.

I live on the outskirts of Newcastle, Staffordshire, supposedly a good area yet I'm getting quoted silly money by some insurers, one was £1900 ffs!

As the op says, fine were I 18 again.....

Oh look its the compare your insurance quote thread again. The most pointless of all threads on this forum.

How is this thread pointless? I described my problem in the opening post and I'm asking for advice.

Wind your neck in.

Edit: You hypocrite - you created a thread on car insurance some months ago, and you provided little to no information about yourself in the OP so nobody could quite help you making it a pointless thread.

You still want to bitch?

You're very lucky. We pay £1160 a year to insure a 2008 1.3 Corsa in Stockport and that was the best quote we got! Both over 30 with 2 years no claims bonus.

What you consider low crime, and what the insurers do, are likely to be different. If you are inside the city proper, no matter where, you will pay through the nose. Have you looked on one of those postcode risk calculator sites to see how much the postcode is affecting the results? Moving to Manchester doubled mine, as a painful example. But even in an M9 postcode I was paying less than that for a modified Impreza. There's something else going on here.

Woah. Calm down dear.

I was not critisising your op. I was commenting on the replies that just say " i can insure a 8 litre super car for half that lol!"

There are so many variables that just saying "mine is this" without saying what you do,where you live, how many miles you do and whether you have chosen a stupid excess is largely pointless. There was a guy with a Porsche on here who was raving about his low cost insurance on a boxster at 22 or something then he admitted he had something like a £1000 excess.

This thread is still a bit pointless though because just where you live and what car you have is not going to tell us whether £450 is reasonable or not.

My thread was pointless as well but mine was more a specific question about one variable (postcode).
