Insurance quotes are a joke. What am I doing wrong?

If you live in a city like: Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and not down south your always going to be tarred with the same brush by the ridiculous insurance stats!
I live in a decent part of Liverpool and with 5yrs no claims clean licence I'm paying 1k still on my ST220. Despite the likes of LV etc advertising the magic 5yrs no claims as 75% discount mine went down about £50 for gaining 5yrs:mad:
I don't see why people in what's considered low crime areas should get to pay half of what some people pay as there still just as likely to have a crash as the rest of us!
I think insurance prices should go more on the value of the car. I find it crazy that a brand new 20k car could be insured for the same as a 2k car that has the same engine in.

But not as likely to have their car broken into/stolen/vandalised.....?

Think about it

I was pleasantly suprised as I have just renewed..my renewal was put up of course from my existing insurer so binned them and went with axa ( a paltry compulsory excess as well with them)...down to 191 quid for my mk7 golf gti with performance pack

I think its the lowest I have ever paid for a years insurance in 27 years driving!

Not really take my dad for example. 60yrs old retired, 20+ yrs no claims uses his car twice a week and the lowest his insurance has ever been is £450 due to it being Liverpool. But if they actually looked into it properly in the 38yrs my parents have lived there nobody on there part of the estate has had there car broken into/stolen and they can count on one hand how many times properties have been broken into in 38yrs! So where is the high risk there?

There's nothing wrong with the insurance system, the only problem is people who have absolutely no concept of risk

For me

1.8 Mondeo £700
MR2 Turbo £320
1.2 Renault Clio £545
1.6 MX5 £400
Vectra VXR £550

Makes no sense at all to me, surely I am considerably higher risk driving the MR2 than anything else on that list yet it is by far the cheapest.... Shame I need room for dive equipment otherwise thats the route id go down!

It isn't your own car that is the big risk, it is what you might crash into ( be it a person, a house or someone brand new Ferrari).

This.

Some easy ways to get the price down are to alter your job title, and the location of the car. Garage is among the highest, on the road the cheapest.
Changing my job title from Aerospace Electronics Engineer to Electronics Engineer saved a bit then again more saved to Electronics Technician.

What a massive contradiction. That paragraph pretty much sums up what is wrong with the car insurance system :p

Where is the 'contradiction'? It's all based on actual statistics and raw data.

Electronics Technicians statistically claim less than Aerospace Electronics Engineers.
People who garage cars statistically claim more than those who park on the road.

Why is that difficult to understand? :)

I'm gobsmacked by the fact that only a tiny handful of people (around here anyway) seem to be able to grasp this basic fact

"but its not logical/fair!!"..... something doesnt have to have a logical reason for it to be statistically relevant

I fully understand it all comes down to statistics, just find it amusing the outcome sometimes!

Sometimes its curious or interesting, but it's never "unfair", "a joke", "ridiculous" or any of the other terms people like to use to get annoyed about prices :)

I understand the principle, however surely a car is more at risk being parked on the road (thinking wing mirrors being caught, pedestrians keying cars as they walk past) than off the road in a garage?

Majority of garages in the UK are designed for older, thinner cars, maybe a lot of people like to hit the sides / the ladder falls onto them / they start with the car in gear and hit the back wall etc... not a lot of damage you can do to yourself parked on the road and the chance of vandalism is postcode dependent so will often work out lowest maybe?

You have missed my point completely. I was referring to the fact that ultimately it doesn't matter , as you can just choose I slightly differently worded profession and get a cheaper a quote...

You just agreed there was nothing wrong with the insurance system, then outlined a stupidly easy loophole that can be exploited.
