Hi guys just bought a new old hp envy 15 it has win8.1 but i want to try win 10 on this device.

Can i and how do i set the win8.1 for free upgrade and then replace the hdd with an ssd and fresh install windows 10 on it and get it to activate?

I downloaded the 64 bit iso to usb media earlier so this part is already completed. Will the change to an ssd post win 8.1 activation and win 10 activation work properly?

As i had to recover the laptop win 8.1 isn't yet activated on this laptop but it was previously as its a year and a bit old!

I upgraded win 7 to 10 , this was on a hd then pulled the hd and put an ssd in and did a new install with no problems at all and it activated fine , im sure i read somewhere that only a mobo change will fail activation.

1. Activate 8.1 (Important)
2. Install windows 10 as upgrade (Make sure its activated)
3. Swap out to SSD
4. install w10 from usb drive
5. windows should activate from mobo ID
6. Profit

P.S there is a sub forum just for windows 10.... just saying

Thanks i actually went for it last night and barely finished by midnight although the SSD install from usb 3.0 (sandisk extreme 240gb) only took about 13 mins lol.

The time consuming part maybe i could have skipped was downloading 138+ updates to take a freshly installed win 8.1 on hdd to the latest version to give me the upgrade now icon

could i have skipped this and just ran from usb in windows without downloading gigabytes of win 8.1 fixes and updates?

I think you can yes.. as long as 8.1 is activated you should be able to upgrade from the USB with no 8.1 updates installed.
