Do you unplug electrical stuff during thunderstorms? My old mum dashes round the house unplugging everything. TV, TV areal all sorts. I've never really bothered (other than turning off the PC) but I have had a ADSL router killed during a storm.

I have a surge protection plug at home, thought that would prevent problems?

Only good quality ones will prevent thunder and lightning. Was yours made in China?
