So I am looking at renting a new home but its a bit out in the sticks with unpaved track that in winter I have been told can get quite muddy and hard to pass.
I want something reliable and under 6k ish and not as slow as a tractor. Not bothered about MPG so prefer petrol to diesel.

So far I am thinking.

Suburu Outback / Legacy 3L R and Spec B 2005 onwards with less than 80k on them.
Volvo XC70 or a XC90
Audi Allroad

Any one got any suggestions?

Will you need about ground clearance, a Legacy does not have loads.

Grand vitara
Panda Cross 4x4
Rav 4/ CRV

Doesn't need to much ground clearance its more for slip so decent tyres and 4x4 should do the trick. I also had a more outlandish suggestions of a Cadillac SRX 3.6 Elegance 4WD 5dr can be had for just under 7k not sure it ticks reliability box though?

I like the Rav 4 suggestion but its not the best looker or particularly fast. Any other suggestions with 4x4?

Must be plenty of VAG group cars like the Scout or <insert favoured Audi Quattro saloon here>.

Impreza
159/Brera 4x4
Freelander
Screw the budget and get an Integrale or GTR.

My old man used to have a non. Sporty Impreza when we worked part time on a farm. Only got stuck once where other similar vehicles were getting stuck left and right. When. He was finished with it the farm bought it from him and it's still going strong getting hammered around all over the place.

Liking the suggestion on the forester as well some nice examples up here and thats rare. X5 and Merc are 02 plates with higher miles so i expect would throw up some bills and may not be as reliable as I would like.

Only worthwhile "big" 4x4 is a proper land rover ;) Sure you can get one in that price range... but it'll be high mileage.

Can get plenty of Subaru Imprezas and Forrester's in that price range... can be quite reliable as long as you buy one that hasn't been abused.

Plus much nicer for the main road.
