I used to play hockey as a kid and loved it, but stopped eventually for what ever reason. I recently went skating though and it all came back, I'd love to get back into it.

I've had a quick google around and it seems that you either have to be a child or a pro player to get involved in the game. Not much of a middle ground to speak of if any... I suppose that's what you get with a not so popular sport.

Anyone involved? anything I should know about?

It very much depends where you live adult rec teams are there, Nottingham, Sheffield, Coventry have varying levels of amateur teams. Anywhere where there is a decent rink really.

Have you thought about inline hockey ? I gave up playing ice hockey due to the stupid times at Nottingham they allowed us on, 10.30 pm on a Sunday evening is not really a nice time. So started playing inline hockey just as much fun but a little harder work.

Sport for all if you are under 18 should be the slogan these days.

I think I'll have a look into inline. Come to think of it, it's got to be more common purely for availability of courts.

It does feel that way in some sports!

Where in the UK are you?

I've largely been a roller player as no ice near me, but did manage to play in an ice team for around a year when I was staying somewhere else a a few nights a week for work. Was handy that they had rec team training the nights I was staying nearby, had great fun.

Back on the wheels now though as no longer near any ice again.

I remember in school maybe year 8 or 9, we had P.E. and played indoor hockey. The P.E. teacher spoke to me and said I was really good and should look into playing it more.

Did I bother? Nope :( Would have loved to though!

No excuse not to then ;) Wish I had something nearby, it's at least 2 hours to get anywhere for me I think, and 3 to get to where I used to play.

Bought a new pair of skates whilst in the US last year, 15 months or so on still not got to use them :( Might take them back over when we go in November and at least try them out!

Used to play roller hockey for the Swinton Sabres here in South Yorkshire. Had trials to play for county and GB. Never made the switch to ice although our two netminders did and made a career of it. Andy Jaszczyk was with the Sheffield Steelers a few seasons ago and Steve Fone was with the Coventry Blaze, now at Manchester Phoenix.

Kinda wished I moved to ice now, could have made something of it.

We played in GBinline a few years ago, another sport let down by lack of venues. Sheffield /Rotherham did have a big inline scene about 5-10 years ago.

Used to play roller hockey, stopped skating when I was around 20. Wish I'd stuck with it or even made the move to ice, I still miss it but I'm old and unfit now :p

I stopped roller when I was 16, started again when I was 28, and I'm rather older than that now.

Yeah I'm an oldie and rather unfit but it's still fun so no excuse not to give it a go :)

Biggest thing for me was when I stopped it was quads and balls, then when I started again it was inline and pucks (which after getting used to is much better) :)

There are plenty of teams about, more so in areas where there's ice. Was playing at the nationals a few years ago in Rotherham and the Manchester team had a fair few phoenix players I believe.

I live near Whitley Bay too and I enquired about joining a team...man probably 6 years ago or so now. I played roller hockey a lot as a kid as I grew up a fan of the NHL and ice hockey just wasn't as accessible. I could play roller hockey at the local school yard or in the street so it was nice and easy.

When I asked about it, there was certainly an adult team in the Newcastle area who played at Whitley. Obviously no idea if they are still around - but I noticed there are 1 or 2 American Football teams popping up around here too so with any luck there is a team still around.

I never ended up going as I was just too busy to commit to anything at the time.
I ended up joining a Squash league when I finally had time and take that very seriously now but wish I'd at least been able to try it as I was always a very good skater!

(maybe i'll teach my kids as I'm looking to have some soon)
