Hi Guys,

We are in the very early stages of moving house. The house are looking at is great and we are ready to pull the trigger. All seems good so far and it's only about 1/2 a mile from us currently. I initially checked the rightmove broadband checker but have subsequently found out that that only checks the exchange. Subsequent openreach checks show that the cabinet is "High Demand" and after a phone call to Plusnet, they have no dates for upgrade. Speeds for the standard broadband are suggested at ~3Mbps. I work from home and although normal broadband would technically work, it would be both frustrating to use and difficult to to complete some of my more demanding tasks.

On the bt wholesale address check, I can't see any signs off FTTC speeds but in the notes i get the line: FTTC is currently not available on this cabinet due to following reasons:- Sorry your cabinet is temporarily unavailable, capacity will be restored as soon as possible.

I'm guessing that the cabinet has no ports free.

I know this is a piece of string with what is actually happening at the cabinet currently so is there any way to get information regarding plans for this cabinet because, as much as i don't like to admit it, this could be a deal breaker.

I would imagine that it will be resolved in the not too distant future since an at-capacity cabinet passes all the tests for whether there is enough demand in an area to make a rollout commercially viable.

Cool, thanks for that. That is what I was thinking too / hoping really, but with Openreach being Openreach, you never know what is going to happen.

I can't find any kind of contact at Openreach who I would be able to ask this question to, the NGA.enquiries address was closed last year it seems.

Is there not a date in the availability column.

No guarantees they will meet it but it's a start. I've seen people wait several months for capacity to be added so I'd be very cautious if I was you, being so reliant on it. Definitely possible for a long wait stuck on ADSL.

Pretend you're interested in taking out FTTC with A&A and see if they are able to get you an expected date when capacity will be available. Their tech support people will do a better job of this than the ones at BT/TalkTalk/Sky who will just tell you that you can't have it.

I have a similar thread in the home and garden for different opinions there. I found the cabinet and linked new fttc cabinet also tonight so definitely a capacity issue. Will be a couple of months at the earliest I would imagine so I'll keep checking and if nothing changes after 6 weeks maybe try your suggestion caged. I don't mind a couple of months on slow bb as long as it's not semi permanent.

As for the fttc dates, the check doesn't show anything regarding fttc speeds at all, just that the cabinet is currently unavailable for fttc.

I wouldn't touch a property that doesn't have the guaranteed connectivity I need at the time I'm buying it.

Thirteen years ago when I purchased my current house it was a high priority (NTL 512Kb at the time). Nowadays it'd be an absolute requirement.

The speeds will return, must have only recently gone unavailable as Billy says in your other thread. Same thing happened with the example I posted above.

The only thing that would concern me now is the size of the cabinet, you say it serves about 150 properties. The smaller versions have 128 ports, if it's full I'd be nervous about them being willing to install a new cab for the remaining 22 properties.

If it's not full though all it needs is a new linecard and possibly another tie cable aswell. Could just be 3 weeks untill available again, one week to do the works and then another two for testing before releasing it for orders.

Thanks for that. It's definitely an ECI unit so hopefully potential for 256 ports and it only serves the estate in question.
