The bedroom tax is there to maximise the efficiency of social housing. There aren't enough houses to go around, so we need to maximise efficiency of current stocks.
I would love to live in a house that's bigger than I need or can afford. Spare bedrooms are ace. However, the only way. That's gonna happen is if I get a council house, and go on benefits. Then the government can pay for my spare room, while families struggle in houses too small, and the homeless have no rooms at all.
If you can afford spare rooms, then great. If you can't, they shouldn't be state funded, that's for sure.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be some sort of waiting period for terrible circumstances like that. But are you saying state funded spare rooms should remain state funded for decades? 12 months seems like a reasonable amount of time before suggesting that perhaps a house is no longer suitable for their current family.
You are just taking one example there. My old dear had to move because of the "bedroom tax", and she moved to a house she could now afford to heat, while a family previous struggling in a flat that was too small, moved into a house more suitably sized for their needs. Which is a win win situation.

You've got it all backwards. The evil tories continue to sell off council houses even though demand for them increases. At the same time punishing those who are lucky enough to have secured one but have an extra room. A bedroom tax would perhaps be fair if there was enough houses available so that a downgrade to a smaller house is possible. But when there is a shortage of houses all the tax does is create misery for those who aren't able to downsize. Why is it that the right wing always attack the poor yet turn a blind eye to all the criminality at the top?
Moral values in Scotland and England seem so far apart. We should just go our own separate way.
No you have it wrong. Labour equally sold off the housing stock. Not just the "evil Tories". Sure, the implementation of the policy wasn't great. They should have built new housing for every house sold. But the fact remains, it was a great opportunity for the working poor to own their own homes, and do better for themselves. It was an incentive to work hard, and make something of yourself, something that can be passed down to your children. What an absolute shower of ***** eh?
Anyway, you are still missing the point. The bedroom tax is costing the Scottish government at least £35 million. This is enough to build 700 new homes (based on my old dear moving into a new build development with an average house cost of £50k). That would go someway to alleviating the burden. Heck, they could probably build 1 bedroom homes for cheaper than that, maybe £35-40k, meaning they could, in theory, be building 1000 new homes, every year, small enough to take the number of people needing to downgrade to avoid this "tax".
Sure, there are 45,000 households claiming help for the bedroom tax, but if there is enough one beds made available, that snowballs up the bedroom sizes, and helps massively. Obviously someone else should look into it, for true figures etc... but I'd imagine that with a building program like that in place, it wouldn't take too long (somewhere around 5-10 years) for the housing stocks to recover such that the "tax" is more of a non issue. Rather than just to continue perpetually funding spare rooms for those who cannot afford them, meanwhile doing nothing to address the actual cause of the situation.
