So I’ve managed to completely lose my phone while on the commute to work. I have insurance with the bank and am about to ring. I had a quick read on the T&C as they can sometimes be funny….

My question is there seems to be a bit about “ You must demonstrate you’ve made every effort to report your phone lost”… What does this mean? So report it to my network yes? Anywhere else I need to report it? Police?

I think you need to confirm that you've checked with the lost property of said public transport, and had the old phone network blocked via the IMEI.

Yes, you need to report it to the police as well (you might not have lost it - you might have been pick pocketed).

Yes you need to report it to the police so when it turns up at Cash Converters, the police can go and collect it.

If it's a Iphone you need to enable the lost my iphone feature with a contact number on it.

My boss had to do this last week, rung bank insurance up paid £65 excess and had a new phone with him the next day.

It means you need to report it lost within 24 hours of it going missing, special circumstances permitting.

So DON'T tell them you lost it longer than 24 hours ago, or there will be a problem.

They also say you need to report it to the police for a Crime Reference number, but whenever I have asked the police one for my insurance they tell me I don't need one. *shrug*.

If it's through Natwest, just say you've lost it and contacted your provider to disable the sim. All you need to do (Did this last week).

Yep, report to police, they will give you a crime reference number. I expect the insurance will want this number

Crime reference number? If it's lost rather than stolen there is no crime.

Indeed you don't need one.

Contacting your provider to get it blocked is all you should need to do.

When I lost mine a couple of years ago, the insurer wouldn't process anything without a crime reference number.
As far as I know, the number just relates to the report given to the police. It not a crime, but letting the police know will certainly help if a station receives the phone as lost property.

It's really not the Police's job to do this. If it's not stolen, it's not the Police's job to collect these details.

How you know it's been lost rather than stolen (i.e. pickpocted)*.

*Ignoring the obvious "I left it on the restaraunt table" scenario. Although in that scenario, if you went back and it wasn't there, the phone has technically been stolen at that point and is no longer lost.

If you phone up the insurance and say your phone dropped under a steam roller while it was tarmacing a road, they'll say you know where it is e.g under the road, and won't pay out. These insurances are mostly con.

Yes yes quite right you are, it has at this point been stolen and not lifted and placed in lost and found or handed in to a police station.
