Don't get me wrong, I live in an area of the south of England that would be considered a "fracking hot-spot" so I'm glad that there's no licence granted for an area close by. However it does seem a bit typical of the Tories to shaft the North to protect their chums in the South-East. So much for the "northern power-house", once again the North is going to be exploited in environmental and economic terms to provide cheap energy for London and the South. #ToriesGonnaTory

Brilliant will bring some good jobs and money to the north.

We don't mind industrial jobs up here you see.

Well the people of Lancashire certainly minded when their county council rejected an application or fracking recently. I don't think this will bring as much money to the North as you think - most of the high value work doesn't need to be done locally and the profits will be sucked to London or some tax haven. I note Ineos have been given three licences - they're registered in Switzerland presumably for tax reasons.

And all the nimbys would reject the kind of coal mining we used to have if you tried to start it today yet they all still whine it shut down too.

Fracking is no good. I can't comprehend why the Tories love it so much. The evidence shows that it has a detrimental effect on the local environment, and with the renewables we have available to us, it's completely ridiculous. I'm glad I don't live near them, but I don't want anyone to live near them at all.

If the Tories are stupid enough to waste more money on fracking than finding a long term feasible renewable source then give them there 5 years. It'll only come back around to them. Sure we get loads of barrels off of them but you've then created a giant man hole, genius.

It's got nothing to do with the N-S divide. The initial tranche is based on the least environmentally sensitive blocks. The others are supposed to be announced in October, it's got nothing to do with the government. It's also worth noting the geology is less promising for fracking* down South and far less blocks were applied for in the south of the country than the North.

*they aren't fracking licences either. They are oil and gas exploration licences, many of which (especially in the south) will be for conventional oil and gas exploration. Unfortunately the media are clutching at the fracking angle and trying to cause more of a stir than they should be...

The Tories aren't wasting any money on fracking. No public money is going into it, it's all money from private/listed companies. If you're on about the reduction in supplementary tax the O&G industry has to pay on profits then have another think about what that means. If shale isn't going to work then there is no profit, ergo no tax to pay. If there are, companies making money from fracking will still have to pay a tax rate far higher than other industries, just not quite the 60-80% tax conventional oil and gas production pays...

but you can use the money to develop the renewable?

you've developed a few rather small holes which you can fill up in a day?

I think the vast majority of people - north and south - are against fracking. This is blatant abuse of position.

Actually, you'll find that about two thirds of people polled recently* were ambivalent/unsure when asked whether they were for or against. It was almost 50/50 for and against of those who had an opinion either way.

So no, most of the population aren't against fracking, however a significant proportion of the population are unsure and/or don't know enough to make a decision.

Lol with it being green peace in surprised the questions wasn't "are your for or against the rape of mother earth by evil corporations and their phallic fracking drills"

Whack up some more of those lovely turbine things. Shed loads of them round my way, very peaceful. Also when the gulf stream finally gives up the ghost we can just turn the reverse switch on the power flow and fly this multi prop country down nearer to the Canary Islands.
