*** lumia 640 & 640xl ***

Pretty good device I would say. I take a lot of heat from Windows fans in the comments for comparing it's camera to a Nexus 6.

As I've tried to explain, I only have a limited set of devices to compare against, it just gives a point of reference.

I'll be very interested to take a look at a high end device running Windows 10.

ok so my replacement has turned up, and it's doing the exact same thing. I can't believe I have two faulty handsets.

Just installed and launched Spotify, got to the screen where you have to press next through all the setup info. Took 4 taps on the word next before it would proceed to the next screen.

Entering my facebook password, took two attempts to register the letter t

It just seems that the screen isn't fluid when interacting with it, either that or the snapdragon 400 can't cope

also, I setup Cortana on the last handset so why do I have to do it all again? Surely the data syncs to my account?

No torch inbuilt with the os, eh?
No location tracking (ala find my friends, google+) (can this be tracked from a webpage perhaps?)

Haven't yet worked out how the phone can direct me when walking around a strange city. Say I visit....erm...York, and want it to give me walking directions to a restaurant. How do I do it? :-)

I'm in two minds really. Do I wait for windows 10 (and hope the performance improves), or do I just send it back and resign myself to always having to live in two ecosystems
or....do I wait a few years till Microsoft sorts themselves out (although by that time I'd probably want a better phone anyway)

I really want to stay with Microsoft though, but at the minute this phone feels like something from 2010

I'm no longer using mine as my main phone, as nice as I thought it was, at the end of the day the 640 is a budget handset, I only really realised that after using the 930 I bought off here, the difference was like night and day, just goes to show how old and limited the chipset really is, still for the £120 or so I paid for it cant really complain and i'll probably just end up keeping it as a spare.

well I paid £155 for my 640xl, and thinking maybe I should have got the 930 for £200 from the purple shirt outlet

ok, so I'm downloading the uk map for offline mode....an email comes in, so I read it

switch back to maps and it's paused the download. I resume and it starts from 0% again

not sure if its the phone, or the os...but as multi-tasking goes, this things a complete joke

no wonder the ecosystem is dead

Think I'm sending it back, I gave it a go....but it's five years behind the other two

p.s. Prime Now not available on WM (ios and android only) pah

Can someone please try the following and let me know the results

using IE visit hotukdeals.co.uk and start scrolling up and down

is it smooth, or very laggy?

:edit: Doesn't matter, just arranged for a refund. Sticking with android. WM not ready for prime time yet :-(

640 here, it scrolls smoothly but there are large gaps which take a second or so to fill in, if you let it fill then scroll away then back the gap is there again. If I scroll all the way down then up a couple times the entire page disappears.

I notice that it seems to suffer the same fault as my old 710 in that image heavy pages get very glitchy and eventually crash, lack of cache RAM or something.

I still prefer it to Androids handling of web pages though.

That's a shame.

I'm using the app and have no problem, use to use it on IE but with the website layout and image heavy processes, it's not brilliant unless you turn on IE's data compression, for mobile webpages, lighter on the image data.

Fancied a change from android, so picked the 640 up last week.
Quite impressed, even more so for £120.

Still learning the OS, but its primary use will be as a phone and camera, so the lack of some apps is not an issue.

However, one app I do use is the HUKD app. Unless I am being a spanner, I cannot for the life of me find a way to get notifications for deals based on keywords. The app says it supports this, like the android app, but I can see no way to set this up.

Any help would be appreciated.

1) Open App
2) Press the "..." on bottom right for more options
3) "My Profile"
4) Swipe to the right for "alarms"
5) (+) Button for keywords

Make sure you have Push Notification turned on

Enjoy.

Many, many thanks.

However, pressing the 3 dots gives me Log In & About - that's it.
There is no profile option. Do I have to register then log in just to get deal alerts?
I have the supposed official app. Perhaps I have the wrong one?

The 640 XL is great, the only negative I've found is that sometimes returning to the home screen is not totally smooth, there is a slight pause or hiccup or lag halfway throught that process, as it re-draws the tiles. Don't know if that is dependent on what tiles you have or how many of them, or the background pic. I will have to experiment. My Nokia 625 doesn't exhibit the same behaviour.

I think for me the jury is out too on the size, it is my first big phone, and I'm not 100% sure if the XL was the right choice instead of the straight 640.

You'll need to log in to get it to work.

It's basically tied to your profile, alerts you in app and when on web logins.
If you've not signed up, do that and start buying useless stuff because it's cheaper now based on camelcamelcamel :p

Got a windows update on the 640XL yesterday, don't know what it was. 5-10 min install with a couple of re-boots.

More comfortable with the size now. Although you can use it with one hand, depending on what you are trying to do, accepting that you sometimes need to use two hands, and accepting that and running with it, all is fine. I guess every screen size is a compromise in one way or another.

Tuvoc, I know what you mean. I am now quite dexterous with the phone on one hand (flip cover open, read and reply, flip cover back, all one handed!).

Still impresses people with the size, cost, the sunlight readability compared to their more expensive handsets e.g. S5 / iPhone 5C.

Just waiting for Windows Mobile 10 to come as I really like it on my 920. The "nipple" or whatever you call it should make clicking specific stuff on webpages top corner a little easier, not found anything that makes the Keyboard more suitable for 1 handed just yet.
