Gas works burnt a hole through my shoe!

Doesn't look like a burn to me. Also, who walks on their heels?

+1 Hot tarmac hasn't caused that. A lot of use and wear has. just buy yourself some new shoes and stop trying to blame someone else for the wear. The sole on the heal looks paper thin with all the wear so it was going to break regardless

Mixture of both, the shoes are worn but the hole was not there when I left. Also of what use is the part of my foot that I walk on? I happily admit that I will buy new shoes (Thats not their fault I know) but the tarmac was hot enough to burn with no signs. I have no intention to make them pay for the shoes, I just want them to put signs down when working dag nabbit

Its usually the ball of your foot that makes the most contact with the ground, so logically this is where you'd expect to see the damage, no? Also, the heel is the thickest part of the sole, so you're even less likely to see the damage there.

It doesn't look like melted rubber, there's no burnt mark.

For it to create a hole that large with a split second contact when walking, surely the heat would need to be significant enough to cause some charred areas?

True, I'm not sure about it to be honest. It's just odd as the shoes were fine last week when I was walking in the rain with no water being let into the shoes then today I find this and a hole in my sock in the same area. I assumed they had been worn and the tarmac had just aided the process for the hole.

Looks like they just fell apart at the wrong time. Buy more shoes! And buy more then 1 pair. Couldn't imagine wearing the same shoes everyday. Get 3-4 pairs and rotate.

(Serious suggestion)

Mice/Rats?

(Had you stepped on a piece of chewing gum it might have attracted them and once they started on it they just kept chewing)

Unless you check the soles of your shoes every morning you would not notice if this happened overnight.
