Been over 5 years since I built my current PC and now upgrading to Skylake (and Windows 10). Looking to build a new PC that will last 5 years in terms of performance and technology.

Currently have:

Samsung 913N
Antec 300 case
Corsair HX 650W Pro Series
Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P ATX
AMD Phenom II x2 555 Black Edition
Artic Freezer 7 Pro
Corsair XMS3 2 x 2Gb DDR3
Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 1Gb GDDR5
Samsung 500Gb SATA drive

Already replaced the ageing Samsung 913N monitor with a Dell U2515h this week.

How does the following Skylake build look ?

Antec 300 case (from current build)
Corsair HX 650W Pro Series (from current build)
Samsung 500Gb SATA drive (from current build)
Intel Core i5-6700k or i7-6700k
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 ATX
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz
Samsung SM951 256Gb M.2 PCI.e ACHI SSD
Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Topflow SR1 CPU Cooler or Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler

I have deliberately not included a graphics card as I do not currently game. I may try some games using the GPU and if I need to buy a dedicated card then I will do so at a later date, though it will just be one, however I may try the HD 5750 that I have already but have a feeling this would be pointless as it further down the graphics hierarchy than the GPU ?

I would have gone for another Gigabyte motherboard but there is not much availability, besides the ASUS look like better bang for buck.

I have looked a loads of different air coolers and have narrowed it down to one of two having decided that I wasn't going to pay 60-70 for a cooler! Which of these would be the best option in terms of temperatute and quietness ? Open to alternative suggestions up to £50 max. Current PC is noiser than I would like so this is an area that I would like to improve on and I have a feeling that it is the graphics cooler that is noisey. I may end up replacing all the fans in the case later.

Planning to use the PC for doing work, a bit of programming, Oracle, running 4-5 Virtual machines at the same time with Solaris and Windows Server. Not sure whether to splash out the bit extra for the 6700k ? Don't want to go for the 6600k and have to upgrade again, not for another 5 years anyway !

Not sure if I would be over doing it with the 3200Mhz memory ? I am definitely set on 16Gb because of the VM's.

Not planning on overclocking until a few years down the line.

The Alpenföhn Matterhorn looks like another good option. Cheers.

Any advice on other on 6600 v 6700 ? and memory speed ?

If you do a lot of productivity work, want it to last 5 years, and have the money to spend on an i7-6700k, there is absolutely no reason to not get the X99 platform... Unless you are adamant about not getting a GPU.

It has 50% more cores than the 6700k, 50% more threads, it has 8 RAM slots (so you could add 4x4gb now, and 4x4gb later, or 4x8gb now and another 4x8gb later if you run that many VMs :p), and the best part? It's the same price as a 6700k. It overclocks to 4GHz with ease so it won't be too far behind the 6700k in games either.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte X99-SLI - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£50 Saving*** £429.98
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £79.99
Total : £509.98 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

The only problem with the X99 platform is the fact it has no integrated graphics, so you would need to get a graphics card to go on the side... If you don't want to do this, it'd be better to get the 6700k - Maybe not in the long run if you do add a dedicated GPU, though.

Well you do have the 5750 to keep you going...

By the way, why do you need so many vms?

In reality I would probably only be running with a couple of VM's at a time but would have 4-5 in total. Planning on doing development work from home.

If the 6600k is going to be sufficient for my needs ? I'll go for if over the 6700k and save myself £100.
