Joined the WhatsApp revolution tonight.

Yes, yes I know I'm years behind the trend. :o

1 question, if I don't have the app open, but I do have a WiFi connection, will messages still arrive with a notification?

And they keep popping back up until you read them.... (Unless its been updated)

Try to get your friends on hangouts. It's much better and free

Whatsapp is far more polished than Hangouts.
I use hangouts but Whatsapp is far more user friendly, has more options and has a wider appeal.

Off the top of my head the things wrong with Hangouts is:
  • Can't look through pictures sent in the chat log, like you can do in Whatsapp
  • Can't search through chat history
  • These stupid stickers :/
  • If you have no signal the message will fail, which is fine, but on Whatsapp when you actually get signal it'll still send the message whereas on Hangouts you have to go back into it and click resend

You can look through pictures. Tap on a picture the scroll right. There is another way as well. A friend of my got up some old pictures that were posted moths ago. I'll ask him how.

The new stickers I don't like' but I've installed the previous version. It still has the stickers but all the options are in on button rather than along the bottom.

But yeah, your right about the other bits.

The thing with hangouts tho is that it's built into all android phones and you can download it from the app store as well.

I do prefer the look of Hangouts though, it's far simpler and nicer

Hangouts 4.0 improves a lot of the crapness of Hangouts and it's Materialised more than it was before.

The bonus of Hangouts is that media shared on it polls to Google Drive and won't download to your phone like on WhatsApp, and that animated gifs are supported.

But for everything else, WhatsApp is the better all round package.

If you don't want to be notified of every message in a chat, simply silence that chat for up to a year, the messages will still arrive and you can see them when you load the app. I do that with a few groups that are virtually 24/7 active.

The best feature of WhatsApp is that it's widely used and cross platform. Hardly anyone on Android uses Hangouts, let alone other platforms.

A messaging app that 1% of your friends use is useless, regardless of how good it is technically. It's like the people who claim to have invented the next Facebook, but don't realise that the value of Facebook is in its user base rather than its source code.

I tried getting my family and friends to try Hangouts and Telegram but gave up as they refused to move away from WhatsApp.

I use both, mom and dad use watsapp and rest of family are on hangouts.

Always group video call on hangouts, it's great.
