Hello looking at getting the

AKG K612 Pro - Modmic v 4.0 Discount Bundle

currently using a corsair wireless headset.
what else would i need to run the headphones? soundcard or ?
Never had a headset that wasn't usb so its all kinda new.
They'll be used for gaming and movies mostly so would like surround if at all possible.

is the k702 bundle much better?
have around £200 for the lot.

Or if anyone else has any idea for my budget? (need the mic for gaming)

Both K612 and K702 will be good. 702 has larger sound stage I believe. You'll certainly need a sound card with a headphone amp. As rids57 has said, SB Z would be the minimum. Xonar DGX does have a headphone amp, but it's not up to driving the AKG's well enough.

Yeah, just headphones, microphone and sound card. That's all you need.

K701 and SB Z for £155 is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

Yes but no detachable cable which is a godsend with headphones.
Be kicking yourself for not getting the K702 should the k701 go on one channel which it probably will after wear and tear on the cable.

The K701's cable is beastly and I seriously doubt it would break. Detachable cables are handy but in a high end headphone, I don't think it matters. With the K701 you are getting that final % of soundstage which is massive. The K702 is close in performance and is a better buy due to the more comfortable headband IMO.

Rather than a new thread i'll ask here,

I have the K701 and Modmic Combo, individually I love them both, the sound of the K701 is incredible and no issues with the Modmic, friends rate it.

But... my god they are so frustrating together, I hate wires and I've used all the cable connectors throughout the two together, but after a few days they have both tangled to like half the length with knots etc, nothing will straighten them out. Even if they were on their own this issue would still be the same and is an issue of majority of cables... (braided cables would be a lot better atleast for the K701, are their replacement ones?).

Also... the K701 doesn't have a flat surface to stick the mic on, I assume the same for the K712, I've had to order spare connectors (£11 for two...) as the first two have fallen off after a week or so.. I applied them properly but due to not having the full surface area/weight of the cable it doesn't stick.

I've ended up going back my X1/V-Moda BoomMic combo (even the cable on this is trash also) just due to the above.

Any other Mic options or alternatives? I tried desktop mics but couldn't get on with them (Blue Yeti etc)

Good post I bet you'd have to superglue the mic to them, and all cables go in the end no matter how good they are.

I bet you could zip tie the mic to the headband though if you used a few zips so it cant budge or indeed fine something that can protrude a bit from the headband to glue the mic to.

Official replacement cables tend to be expensive and require taking headphones apart and sometimes soldering.

Don't see why anyone would choose hard wired over detachable these days unless it's a bargain on expensive cans with hard wired.

What are your thoughts on the X1 vs Akg 701 ?

Crap, just realised I have the K702s... ha doh! Close :> Yeah they look similar but the part you mentioned is a bit higher up and the mic ends up near my eye! Thanks though.

And yeah you're right, isn't much I can do but just deal with it ha!

Ah it's a hard one if I had to choose, had the X1's about a year now and rate them highly, definitely a warm/full sound with a nice amount of bass. Although I usually need the mic (which replaces the headphone cable) so it's not ideal but works great as a headset. Got a chance to listen to the X2 and really impressed by that also. Couldn't justify only having two similar headphones though so got a K702.

Only had the K702 a couple of weeks but really like how clean/crisp it sounds, can hear everything! The headband makes the top my head a little bit sore after long periods for some reason but just moving it a bit solves that for a bit!

For the gaming I do (CSGO/ESO/Squad), I prefer the K702 so far, though the X1s are great too (esp for entertainment stuff).

What you think of the X1s? What do you use for a Mic?

Well the sound blaster z and akg 701 arrived and were promptly sent back for a refund hahaha.
The sound card failed to install properly on windows 10 and the headphones had these annoying bumps (very uncomfy) on the headband.

modmic fits perfectly under the mini xlr

thats where i have mine, plus if you knock the mic it doesnt come loose as the headphone cable stops it.

the two wires dont even register on my ocd scale.

That's why I always recommend the K702, it has a flat headband which plays very well with my bald head :D

Z should work fine with 10 infact it's the only sc that does

mine kept installing itself as a SB Recon3D PCIe
and didn't work at all and the drivers didn't find the card so wouldn't install.
Im guessing it was faulty so took the opportunity to send the headphones back as well and pick a pair without the bumps haha.

Hmm, I was under the impression that AKG removed the bumps on the 701 headband in 2014. Maybe OcUK received some older models.

They removed them from the K702 in 2014, not sure about the K701, though photo above would say that they did.

As you said, these are probably just old stock that AKG are trying to move.

On the modmic cable issue, I got some flat braid from fleabay and then ran the headphone cable and mic cable down it (had to do it together as it was quite a tight fit due to the expansion/shrink action of the braid) and at semi regular points I used small velcro tape to wrap around to make sure it keeps together ok. I guess if it'd used thinner braid it would have been tighter but probably harder to get the 1/4" connector down it...

Either way it's worked fine, I have a slightly wider braided cable and don't have two cables anymore - result!
