Any ideas when? I don't want to shell out for a NV 960/950 as I want the HTPC to have 4K 60hz Media playback, nothing else as I'm not really a gamer.

Not in any rush right now, funds are going to be a bit tight over the coming months as I've got a new bed to pay for, Tax bill, Potential BIG dental bill, Holiday & the usual Car service/tax/MOT/Insurance bits & pieces.

Cheers

The 950 is your best bet right now and the near future. I am sure it has HEVC decoding. But will need to check its specs.

Currently your only option is Nvidia as people above have stated,
Amd's only option is Carrizo as it supports Hevc h.265 and hdmi2.

I'd say it's too early to invest into a ultra blu-ray disc drive/player, and h.265 hevc gpu for htpc. The lack of media is my main reason for refusing to spend the money on it.

I was an early adopter of both DVD, HD-DVD & blu-ray, got my fingers burnt on the latter. 4K Isnt important to me TBH, I have a 1080p 32" telly & 23" monitor, 720p Projector which don't plan on swapping until they go bang.

So a 4K display in my room is some way off & with the space I have, I wouldn’t get the benefit of it (no room for a telly bigger than 40" & that's too big). I'm not impressed with the way they are planning anti-piracy for 4k content either.

I think the way of 4K is going to be streaming rather than disc (for me anyway) so a 4K source in the form of a HTPC would be nice in the future, then a 4K display at some point (When 8K appears & 4K is cleared for pennies)

8k might be cancelled due to lack of space. Experts agree 8k is the pinnacle but hardly anyone can fit the size of screen needed to make it worthwhile.

We have 4k phablets and other types of portable. I think they will scale 8K to any size. The majority of issues around 8K are the bandwidth required for broadcasting and storage medium.

I think the slow uptake of 4k content will kill 8k. We still have SD channels for gods sake.

8K isnt needed unless you use a giant screen and the visual difference has decreasing returns on the power needed to drive it. I think we'll be at 4k for quite a while. Super high res might have made sense for VR but not as much sense as removing the screen altogether and using that spinning mirror tech to project directly into the eye.

i dont think it will stop them
did you see the news on the 11k phone display coming?
