Havn't upgraded in a long time, been playing on a very old 256mb Nvidia card since my 680 went pop. Then again i've only been playing SWTOR so I havn't really had the need to get anything better.

Now I want to get back into things, there are a lot of great games out I want to be playing, and a lot of good games on the horizon I want to get.

So I need some advice on what to GFX Card to get... I want to be able to play games like GTA5, Battlefront, BF, Witcher, etc. at 60FPS+ on Ultra I dont want to compromise on settings, and I dont want to have to upgrade for another year at least.

Current Hardware;
1920 * 1080 120FPS Monitor
i7 2700k CPU @ 4GHZ
16gig 1600MHZ Ram (Planning on upgrade to 32)

So, especially with the monitor I got getting 60fps on max shouldn't be unreasonable. Question is can I get that with a 970 or a 390X or do I really need a 980ti? I'm willing to stretch to 5-600quid if needs be. But if I can get away with it i'd rather use the extra money to uppgrade other bits. I could do with a new case and no matter what i'll need to upgrade my PSU.

Thanks!

Tbh Khan (Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!! /shakes fist :D) it's all a matter of longevity. Considering the power that the next generation are projected to wield then it might be more prudent to keep to the best value card that you can get away with.

Personally I'd probably buy a s/hand 290X/780GTX and make it last me until the next gen arrive in approx 12 months and then splash out :) (both those cards should take care of 1080p nicely)

Spend the money on the GTX 980 Ti

Forget about upgrading to 32gb of RAM as it will make no difference to gaming.

The 390X is bad value when the 390 is nearly £100 cheaper and offers 90-95% of the performance. You'd be fine with one of those and spending the extra money on other upgrades IMO, but the 980 Ti is of course the best card on the market right now.

Them Titan Xs are not bad but best avoided for 1080p.:D

390 or used 290X would be best bet until the next gen cards come out in about 6 months. 980Ti/FuryX if you are gaming at 1440P or higher.

Thanks for the advice all, I do want to get one sooner rather than later though. In my experience there is always 'that better card' coming out in just a few months, and then the competitor card which will destroy it just a few months after that. It never ends :)

At the moment the fan isn't working on the piece of crap that i've got and I'm itching for some good gaming. I think I might just go for the 980ti and be done with it, it should be enough for any games coming out in the next year and I could always add another down the line and SLI if need be.

Yes, I have been looking closely at the 780 cards too, they have been going for £150 in the M.M which is a bargain. I could grab two of those and still save £300...

An R9 390 8GB or GTX970 until 14NM/16NM GPUs are released next year IMHO.

I wouldn't be spending £500+ on a 28NM card now as the process has been uber milked to death and 14NM/16NM will be a massive improvement especially with FINFETs.

As process nodes goes its probably the longest we had for cards for years, especially with TSMC 20NM being non-viable and the GF 20NM node being cancelled.

I'd consider a 390 from Sapphire or MSI and then wait for the next gen. If you do not want to wait then the 980ti is the all out king however having just got a Fury Tri-x myself I can tell you that you wouldn't be disappointed if you went with one of those. And with that being such a good cooler it makes me lean towards the Sapphire 390 Nitro which has the same Tri-x cooler with zero idle spin tech etc. The only thing missing with the 390 is it doesn't have a backplate which is a shame but not technically an issue. That's why I mentioned the MSI 390 gaming, That does have a backplate and higher stock clocks. I'd still take the Tri-x personally but but at least now you know what's different between them.

If your having doubts about cost of 980 Ti, def worth looking at cheaper options as nothing worse than buyers remorse (I know this well lol) if you want something with more bang for buck, the GTX 970 or R9 390 make more sense.

I think the R9 390 8GB is best bang for buck card atm with 970 a close second. Can't go wrong with either tbh. Like Cat says next year we get real progression and a big shake up in GPU space (Get something higher end then). Probably not worth shelling out loads on a GPU now if your already having doubts.
