Gigabyte WF3 780TI just gave way, with smoke. Ugh.

Cool starry bra etc..

Mid BF4 session tonight, machine hard powered off and didn't reboot. Wouldn't respond to the switch, had to dig out a spare GPU to get it back. Thought I'd lost the board/chip/RAM due to a PSU blow out for a bit.

Anyway, during diagnosis I got a wisp or smoke and a burning smell out of the GPU. Have opened a case with Gigabyte as this has a 3 year warranty thankfully.

Anyone RMA'd a 780TI to GB recently? Know what the turnaround time is likely to be? Presumably it'll be a like for like exchange as it's a relatively modern GPU?

Also, what causes GPUs to go like this and what's the likelihood that it could have damaged anything else? The fact I'm typing this on the machine now gives me confidence, but I've never had a GPU go so violently to the point where the machine refuses to even power on with it installed.

It shouldn't take long; I'd say around several days to about a week, though quite possibly less. Mine took longer (GTX570) due to a lack of stock.

Nice one, cheers fellas. I just found the thread with the GPU vendors warranties and it looks like they have a UK RMA. Bodes well.

Right, off to bed now I've calmed down!

If there's no issues, it should take around 5 working days turnaround, based in Milton Keynes.

Gigabyte require postal order or cash for £15 to pay for return shipping of the repaired/replaced unit If you RMA direct with them, instead of through the retailer.

I think you can also arrange your own courier pickup, if you can get it cheaper.

I'll pay the £15 I think, I purchased this from a competitor who have a less than satisfactory RMA turnaround time/attitude. :)

How long did it take Gb to get back to you guys out of interest?

My ticket logged last night is still showing as new, and no reply to emails set to returns as yet.

edit - NVM, they replied to the email. :)

I can't remember for certain, but probably no more than 24 hours.

GB have apparently repaired the card and have sent me screenies of a 36 hour burn in test. Happy days.

I asked what was wrong and what they had to replace to get it working again as I'm a bit sceptical about it all, normally when something gives way with smoke it's pretty terminal but all I got back was:

No burnt out chips find, replace some chips.
Would anyone else be a little concerned?

never heard of replacing components on a card especially ones that burnt out. Very strange. You do know your serial number so you can check you get the same card/different card ?

Me either, that's why I'm querying it with them. However I seem to be coming up against a language barrier when dealing with the RMA department, they just keep repeating variations of the same statement above when asked for specific details on what was replaced.

Yep, I've got serials recorded. They've sent me details of the serial etc along with the burn test proof so I'm 99.9% confident I'm getting my card back.

Given the terror this card caused when it went I'm loathed to drop this back into my X99 setup now. :(

Gigabyte actually do repair cards, so don't be surprised if you get your card back.

They are one of the few companies who do these sorts of repairs.

I don't mind the repair so much, more over I'd like to know what was repaired to get it up and running again.

They've stopped replying to my mails as of 10:30am this morning after a pretty rapid back and forth, guess I'll just wait for it to arrive now.

English won't be their primary language, I am sure they repaired it correctly however as they have a rather solid reputation.

One of 8 Pack's Titan X's went up in smoke but he was pushing it, they repaired it and no issues for him. Was very good of them as he had voided the warranty by LN2 cooling, but I intervened and they agreed to repair for him. :)

OK, I figured they'd just relocated a portion of their Taiwanese staff to the UK to deal with RMA's directly or something.

Good to know on the quality of the repair, hopefully it'll hold out for the remaining life of the card. Following the card going wrong I've read loads of reports online of the 780Ti WF3's being problematic, has taken some time for these reports to emerge as there was little to nothing online about it when I was researching what card to buy.
