I'm a potential child killer

I don't agree with what you've done, but being penalised for 0.4 seconds seems a little harsh to me. Does the dash cam show you've crossed the stop line before the red light shows?

They would just respond with reference to the rules for amber

"AMBER means ‘Stop’ at the stop line. You may go on only if the AMBER appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident"

Given the timescales involved and how long an amber light would show for, I think you would struggle to argue that you couldn't stop safely without causing an accident without implying you were probably speeding.

My manager got done for this, he tried to stop but crossed the line slightly (you can see in the photo his hazard lights are on from braking hard!). He tried contesting it but just accepted it

The amber light is on for 5 seconds, this means stop too. So he's been done for 5.4 seconds over.

Traffic light awareness course? Haha. Hahahahaha. lol :)

I see so many people going through reds these days, sometimes long after it has gone red. Didn't think anyone got caught doing this anymore - the monitored ones are obvious and there seem to be few police around to enforce the rest.

This sort of thing is a serious concern for me: I'm very tall in the trunk so the traffic lights are not as visible for me. (I have relatively short arms so cannot adjust the rake to compensate.)

I thought I got hit by one of those a few months ago since I went through just as it changed, but nothing ever came through the post. There was a guy right up my arse at the time (who stopped over the line) so maybe he got the fine :D Though I'm told most red light cameras have a few seconds grace period.

While this is fine for liability it really shouldn't be how you think about driving, you should always be cautious and avoid having your car ruined.

Cautious shouldn't involve breaking the law to avoid an accident though.

5 seconds is a long time. It's never normally that long. Normally 3 seconds.

I'm not sure how true it is but I remember reading that the time for an amber light is dependent on the speed limit of the road divided by 10.
So for a 30mph it's 3 seconds, for a 40mph it's 4 seconds and a 50mph it's 5 seconds.

Would make sense as those are all adequate times to stop if you're going the limit. Myself, if I see a light has been green a while and anticipate it changing I floor it. Obviously on private roads, Officer :o
