I'm going to be moving house soon and I'm going to have to be absolutely ruthless in what I pack and what I throw away.

Sentimental things aside, is there any point in keeping items like old University work/documents, DVDs/CDs, very old computer games (I'm talking original Command & Conquer series, Theme Hospital (who remembers that!?), etc).

Almost anything entertainment wise is now online one way or another, however old toys like Lego, scalextrics I can't bring myself to part ways (will most likely pass on to the kids or nephews/nieces).

So, how ruthless have some of you been when moving? Also any recommendations on the best place to bulk buy some decent sized cardboard boxes?

We started off quite sentimental, but ended quite ruthless as the scale of our stuff ownership became obvious (something that is really coming into focus as we are emptying our storage locker, which was largely filled at the start of the process and a good 50% of it is crap).

Uni work, only worth keeping if relevant to your current employment, old computer games can go, DVDs etc are more complicated, but quite a few of ours went to the charity shops.

For boxes, try your local McDonald's who will often lend you them for free, failing that local self storage places or if you are having a removal firm in, they can often lend you boxes for packing and will have them back when you are done. Some of the national firms can be less willing to do this however.

Good luck with the move, we did it twice in the last 12 months (complex chain with us selling two properties, so we moved into rented while they sorted out then went in to buying chain free), I hope to never have to move again, it is not a fun process.

We have 1 more load to move.
Made my missus be ruthless so out went her a level and uni notes (15 years ago). Half the crap in the loft was chucked too. Reduced the strain on the kitchen ceramics too.

3 bed house takes 2 x extra long wheel base transits it seems.

She still has 6 packing boxes of stuff to sort through dating back 10 years along with 23 boxes of craft materials.

And she wondered why I started to get a little irate......

Throw the university work unless you know you'll use it again or simply cannot bare to part with it.

Recycle the old DVDs and CDs online. The ones that aren't accepted just give away to charity shops.

It's liberating being able to cut down on your stuff. I personally hate tat. My rule is: If it hasn't been used in a while and you're extremely unlikely to use it anytime soon, get rid. That includes books that have been sat on your shelf for three years waiting to be read, or those things you have 'just in case'.

Cut your stuff down to the stuff you actually use regularly; the breathing space is worth it. There are in my opinion, very few things that are irreplaceable and unable to be recycled or thrown.

Remember, you own your stuff, not the other way around.

the CD's/DVDs surely you can take a copy and then dispose of them... maybe just keep only selected ones, special editions etc..

old uni work - not much point unless particularly relevant - though like with CDs take a digital copy if you like

ditto to some textbooks - have had the physical copy when I needed it for a course and was using it regularly but then you can often find the pdf version for free on say the authors website

have made a point of buying the kindle version of most books these days and rarely buy a physical book - books were the biggest pain when moving from a flatshare to my own apartment... I mean if you can eliminate books, CDs/DVDs then you make moving a lot easier IMO

We moved 11 years ago and there is still stuff boxed in the loft that has never seen the light of day. :D

I had a box like that last time I moved.. No idea what was in it and I obviously hadn't needed any of it for about 5 years so the whole box went in the bin. I'm going to be moving again in about a month but this time we have two peoples rubbish to sort and an extra 6 years worth of tat collected, really not looking forward to it!

I just moved recently, threw out all my old games and boxes.

C n C tiberian sun etc :(

Good times. Not worth anything though I checked so I binned them.

I binned a load of my old big boxed games. Only after I'd binned them I realised quite a few of them were worth a decent bit of money on Ebay! I probably threw away a couple hundred pounds worth. :(

Put CDs and DVDs on here for a pound each, I wish I'd done that but we sold ours to music magpie
