Keys, passport, wallet, phone is my usual checklist. If I have those then I can pretty much deal with anything else down the line. As said, depends where you're going. And if you need meds, of course. A lot of stuff I thought I should take has turned out to be far cheaper to buy in my destination rather than at home.

Plenty of good advice for bits to have with. After the years and years of travelling around the globe ultimately I found the only things you really REALLY need are:

Passport
Wallet (with credit card... or cash)
Condoms (if going to asia.......... yea I'm sure some people may understand

If I ever forget to pack something I figure well I can always just buy it while overseas.
