Using the xfx 7950 looking to upgrade in the next few possibly to a 970 but is it going to worth it? Mainly play csgo (I know it isnt demanding) but when I play the witcher gta etc id like a bit higher gfx. I will be getting a p much new setup and more than likely be going for the i7 4790K.

Many thanks in advance

390/390x would be the best upgrade IMO.

Over double the VRAM (8GB compared to your current 3GB) and over double the performance.

I'd stay clear of the 970, as it only has 3.5GB of full speed VRAM, which is hardly more than your current 7950.

Sorry should have specified that I didn't really want to stay with AMD this time thought I would try a Nvidia

And thank you to everyone else who responded looks like that's what it will be

That was my feeling when I upgraded from my 7950. I went 970 and before the vram saga came out I was underwhelmed by it. When the vram saga hit I felt the way nvidea kept the truth hidden and the way they dealt with it when they got found out was terrible.
That aside I still couldn't wait to send it back. Got me a 290x lightning in the end and I'm way happier with it. Each to there own ;)

Dunno why you want to avoid AMD but the 390 is the best performing card in that price bracket, it's the "no brainer" choice and most "future proof" with the 8gb of vram and the DX12/asynchronous compute advantage AMD seem to have. Choice is your's though, enjoy whatever card you get.

HMM maybe I will have to think about this for a little while I have a few weeks to make the decisionb. Will have to maybe do a little more research although im sure your knowledge is well above my own rn.

Yep, anything other than the 390 for this price point is madness IMO.

I have yet to run into to GTX 970 VRAM issue, other than CoD AW i have not yet got to 3.5GB, close but not quite.

The GTX 970 is a fine card and is some ways better than the 290/390 but the 390 is also a fine card and in other ways better than the GTX 970, either one will serve you well.

Ok so how is it that in this thread 4Gb of ram isn't enough for CSgo and yet in the other thread it is enough for GTA V at 4K maxed out, you guys on the red team really need to sort your stance on this out.

TBH depends on how long the OP is planning to keep the card.

He has a 7950 now, so it's reasonable to assume he wants to keep the new card for a few years, which would make the 390/390x a far better choice IMO, due to the 8GB VRAM and fantastic DX12 performance.

Never had an issue with GTX970 VRM either at 1080 with some games using the upscaled rez thing in the drivers also, think the issue was blown out of proportion.

Performance is good too, and cool even with an overclock.

390 or 970, either or.

Haven't run in to problems with a single 970 yet - it runs out of grunt before it runs out of ram.

As far as csgo goes, you can probably run it on a calculator; 2560x1080 / 2x DSR and everything up full and a 970 won't even break a sweat. Witcher 3 though, I can't run that with everything g up full and maintain 60fps. I have to knick a few settings down but it still looks fantastic.

I went 7950 > 970, it was a great move IMO and still is if youre sticking to a single card and 1080p-ish gaming. If you intend to go 1440p+ then youll need two cards (of this class) and two 8gb 390s would serve you better than two 970s. 980ti / fury x would be a better move though, IMO.

I go for whats best. And i have been stuck with a 560ti for a few years. Yesterday i have on order the 390 msi as its on offer. And from what i read its the best card in that price bracket. Its a no brainier really.

Just that bit more future proofing yourself, crossfire them and i dare say a decent 4k performance in the future.

Yeah to answer a few qeustion I will be keeping this card for minimum of 3 years (Uni legnth) and in regards to what res im playing 1920x1080 and even lower when I play csgo. Being able to play csgo isn't my main concern as I know it will run just being able to play any game that might come out which takes my fancy at a decent level, not the best but something more than good and I'll be happy.

This, having also used both for some time now.
