It's all kind of irrelevant though. The simple fact is we can't. Sure the first hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, million? But when do we draw the line?

Opening our doors to them still doesn't fix their 'home'. So it just encourages more of the behavior.

I am all for helping, but the big picture is opening our doors actually solves nothing. Short term we make a tiny percentage feel safer/ better, but in the long run solves nothing for these countries.

Long term mass immigration on our own country? Who knows.

I am not saying do nothing. But that is irrelevant also because we are doing something. It's just the problem is so vast that simply relocating people accomplishes nothing.

I'm so conflicted about this. I hate that these people are so desperate to escape the hell-holes they come from that they've already risked their lives to get here, and you can't fail to be moved watching them on the TV. After all, it is only by luck that our positions are not reversed.

On the other hand, this cannot go on. We cannot take wave after wave of migrants indefinitely. If we tried, we could cause serious problems in our own countries.

And what good would it do to turn Britain into another Syria... Sure that's not likely in the immediate future, but if we keep taking people whose values are so alien to our own, who knows would could happen long term.

The fact is, they do bring their cultures and values with them, and the vast majority will /not/ adopt British values (although their children might). We've already seen that if you get enough of them together our own police become afraid to enforce British law for fear of being racist...

Ultimately, we have to say 'no' to some of them :/ And I hate that, but we otherwise we'll end up with the same unrest here. And I do believe that.

However it's in everyone best interests (long term) both with regard to our (theirs and ours) own cultures/ civilisations/ religions (this can do-one but I know some people are fond of religion)/ communities/ etc. that we do not just open the doors to everyone.

Is it really a crisis, or is it just few people getting impatient while they wait in the queue? Non-English people aren't very good at queuing, perhaps that's half the problem right there.

Its early days but its got the making of a full blown crisis beyond the proportions of anything we've seen in that regard before - the stuff in Calais and even Hungary, etc. is just the tip of the iceberg - events over the last few months has displaced millions of people and to touch on amigafan2003's post - not all of them are the traditional moderates escaping repression - there are various groups of various degrees some through to extreme that have ended up in untenable situations, etc. as various governments, militias, allegiances, tribes, etc. have shifted or won out leaving them fleeing.

If they want change then they need to force change at home. It's not easy and it will take several decades most probably, but simply hopping borders and taking it with them is not the answer.

Sadly its not that simple - you often have 3-4 or more different ethnic, religious, etc. groups that at best have lived with uneasy truces until events of late - some have lost the protection of governments that are too busy dealing with other issues/civil wars, some have made allegiances with new powers that mean they can now dominate other groups that previously they had to get along with and so on. (Trying not to be too specific as I only understand half of what is going on).

Because we don't make them feel welcome? They don't know any different, it is hardly a surprise they choose to hang around with their own people who they can relate to.

All of the different Nationalities who have chosen to live here have done and always will do, until we make more effort to integrate them.
