Eye strain. Solution = bigger + higher res monitor?

I can normally focus on the screen perfectly fine, its just after long periods of use when concentrating extremely hard to try and see the tiny little pixels moving for an enemy in the distance that my eyes get really tired and struggle to see the monitor properly in focus. However I can turn it off and go and sit and watch TV perfectly fine with not a single problem. It really does seem that the monitor is the issue.

I too suffer from eye strain sitting infront of a monitor for an extended period of time. I also wear glasses. I have tried all manner of solutions i.e altering both desk and monitor height and seating position ect.

Eventually I moved the monitor to a well lit room in the house, so I could look out of the window. I also changed the room lighting over from incandescent to LED. My monitor is viewed 31-35 inches away from my seated position on my desk.

Dimmable LEDs on a dimmer switch are perfect when using a monitor for gaming after hours. Less reflective and softer tones when compared to incandescent.

I have also found this to be very helpful. where before I was a lot closer. The height of the monitor has also been adjusted so I am sitting straight, looking ahead directly to the centre of the monitor. I also use a full back chair to support both my neck and the back of my head.

I found the changes I made have been very helpful to me and now my eye strain is far less than I was previously experiencing and my eyes feel less tired than before.

Maybe you need to reassess your enviroment, seating and your monitor arrangement?

you dont sit 30" away from your tv though, right? vastly different focal distances.

Thank you, yes because at the moment I have to slouch to use my monitor properly because it does not have an adjustable stand and is much lower than I when sat at the desk.

I usually play in the dark too but should maybe invest in some form of night lighting, I hate having the main big light on as its just way too bright and is awful basically ha.

But thanks, you've given me some things to consider.

Dimmable LED on a dimmer switch like a Vario Pro Dimmer (uses trailing edge technology) is what i would suggest. Especially as you like to game in the dark.

Closer to the screen helps I think but not much I have to really strain to focus my eyes to see clearly or its all blurred and my eyes just feel heavy.

Whats going to be the perfect step up in size and resolution then to give me the best image quality to reduce this eye strain. At 27" should I be looking at 1440p or 4K? I don't have the rig to drive 4k right now sufficiently as I've got a GTX 780 and waiting for Pascal before I upgrade.

I should add that I have never ever experienced eye strain when playing console on my tv which I sit about 7-8ft from and is 40" 1080p. Then again I've never played ARMA on it :P

It does sound like you possibly need an eye test and maybe different glasses for using a computer.

Your symptoms sound like mine - I don't wear glasses normally, as my eyes are pretty good, but I started using them for computer work (I'm a programmer so sat at a monitor all day) and it helped hugely.

Your eyes should be just below the top of the monitor, try sticking some big books or something under it to raise it up?

Yup, playing in pitch dark is a bad idea - it may be more immersive, but the contrast between the bright screen and dark environment won't help your eyes! Some gentle lighting to the side or behind the screen can help (as long as it's not causing glare on the screen or shining right in your eyes :p)

What you could try is increasing screen size/resolution to 27" 1440p, but use text scaling to make the text larger?

Also try to get a monitor that doesn't use PWM to adjust the brightness, as some people are sensitive to the flicker caused by this, which can cause headaches/eyestrain.

So last night I tried playing with the big lights on, didn't like it so much but - no eye strain at all! Im gonna try and raise the monitor up too next time I play, see if that helps aswell, it will at least save my neck!

I'll look around for a 27" 1440p then come payday, even if I do manage to solve the problems with my current monitor I would like a bigger one.

Good to hear the adjustments are working in your favour
