Does anyone here believe in expensive cables?

If you are using traditional room treatment (like they use in studios)... I recommend you remove all that rubbish and replace it with these pebbles. LOL.

"What the heck is it? Brilliant Pebbles is a unique and comprehensive system for tuning the room and audio system based on special physical properties of highly symmetrical crystal structures. Brilliant Pebbles has been evolving since its introduction 6 years ago at the London HI Fi Show, especially the number of applications, many of which were discovered by our customers. Brilliant Pebbles addresses specific resonance control and RFI/EMI absorption problems associated with audio electronics, speakers and cables, as well as acoustic wave problems associated with the listening room boundaries and the 3-dimensional space within the boundaries. Brilliant Pebbles comprises a number of precious and semi-precious stones (crystals) selected for their effectiveness. The original glass bottles for Brilliant Pebbles have been replaced by clear zip lock bags, which have a more linear response than glass. We employ a number of highly-specialized, proprietary techniques in the preparation/assembly of Brilliant Pebbles to enhance the crystals' inherent characteristics. The fundamental operating principle of Brilliant Pebbles involves a number of atomic mechanisms in the crystals. Brilliant Pebbles will enhance the performance of your audio system so your favorite music and even your experience playing online fantasy games will become a mind blowing auditory experience."

I imagine in 10-20 years, when professional audio studios realise how much better bags of pebbles are compared to bass traps and sound panels etc. We will start to see studios with bags of pebbles instead.

$99 per bag, and you get a plastic bag now instead of glass, because plastic bags have a more linear response hahahaha.

there is a never ending stream of fools who are very keen to part with their money so it's hard to blame the snake oil pedlars audio specialists for making this rubbish for them to buy.

Although it is almost unbelievably stupid what some people will buy, I don't think they should be making them in the first place. It is fraud and I am not sure why it is legal, probably because law enforcement have bigger things to worry about than dumb people buying overpriced items. IF cables over about £100 actually did something that the others don't, then they would still be a rip off, but at least they would do something, but they don't even make any difference.

The way I see it, it's almost comparable to people's belief in god. Like religion, cable mythology is surrounded by believers and doubters. To me, if there's no obvious evidence or cold hard scientific facts and is continually questioned (even by many of the people who actually own these expensive upgrades and STILL aren't 100% sure they're hearing a difference!), then it probably just exists in the person's mind.

There is a thread on head-fi with about 30 blind tests etc. and every time they cannot tell the difference between cables. Maybe they do make a small difference, but the quality of recordings is more obvious than any changes in cables. Can't say I notice much / any difference between £10 profigold and £40 QED cables, I notice differences in amps, DAC's have subtle differences, bitrates and recording quality is obvious. But cables seem to be either obviously bad or the same.

I read somewhere or perhaps heard someone saying it on youtube, that cables can't or don't actually add anything to the sound, but they can take away from the sound. So I guess he's basically saying that most cheap or stock cables block the detail rather than gold or silver actually adding to or enhancing the quality.

They don't add anything (if they do it is a bad thing) and its probably true that more expensive cables preserve the signal slightly better, but like with expensive audio USB cables, the differences (if there are any) between a good cable and a £3000 cable are less audible than other things like recording, speakers, bitrate etc. so it is a waste of money.

I recently acquired a pair of HD700's and they were a little too short to run to my Asus STX in the cable run I wanted. On the advice here I bought a bog standard 1/4 1m extension cable - none gold, just standard metal alloy.
I did some A to B testing switching and couldn't hear any difference at all. So i'm very dubious on 'super dooper' cables.
Maybe you get to a limit where changing cables *can* be heard but I'd hate to think what that limit would cost.

being as we are in the Computer section, then no

if it was for Hi-fi, then yes but as long as you have the best (Linn system for example)

I can believe that if you've got a really high-spec system, long cable runs and analogue transmission then it will make a difference.

But in 99.9% of cases, no, I'm not buying it. Especially not when you think about the kind of benefit people would get from investing that money in better equipment.

Maybe if you already had the best possible speakers and system you may as well buy expensive cables as well, but if you are in any way trying to budget then cables should not be a priority above about £40. For example people who buy HD650 then spend £250 on a cable are mad, they could spend that £250 + sell the HD650 and buy some better headphones.

Yeah maybe spending £40-50 or something for cables that are better specced for the distance - not several hundred through to tens of thousands.

I might contemplate buying replacement cables for my HD 650 and AKG K702 for the simple reason that while sitting at my desk they are way too long. My amp is less than a metre away yet I have a 3 metre cable and I end up wrapping it round and round my telephone base to stop it getting tangled in my chair. I still wouldn't spend more than £30 on one though and certainly wouldn't be expecting audible improvements - I would be hoping for identical sound and much improved convenience.
