if someone was to upgrade their mobo cpu and ram only, will they have to freshly install the operating system?

Or is there a way to use the existing hard drive with the pre-installed operating system on the new build?

I know the free windows 10 offer is for upgrade only so if some had a new build I suppose they would have to install windows 7, then the service pack 1 ect and then upgrade to windows 10?

There are a few mobos I like very much, some of them have USB 3 and some on USB 3.1, the USB 3.1 is a newer mobo right? meaning faster, and you cant upgrade to USB 3.1 from a standard 3.0 right?

1. I think it would be best to do a fresh install, I tried it once but it didn't work because of the hardware needing different drivers.

2. Not that I know of.

3.That is correct.

4.Yes it would be newer and you can't upgrade a USB 3.0 to 3.1

ATX is for a ATX Case and EATX is only for EATX Case and usually EATX are for only Intel Extreme Processors since you don't get many EATX motherboards for mainstream, every board varies from one to the other so you can't compare EATX to ATX other than it is bigger.

oh so if I got a i7 5820 then I should get a ATX mobo and not a EATX mobo right?

ALso that gigabyte x99 UD4 mobi, the soecs show it has 2 wifi holes, but ive looked at the main site and others, it doesnt state what type of wifi holes they are for, just wanted to know if it supported the next generation wifi ac...

I have a asus wireless ac network card, so if I get a mobo that has built in wireless ac then I don't have to use the network card and i can save a PCIE slot, do you know what it is?

According to the Gigabyte specs and various reviews, the UD4P is actually an E-ATX motherboard. If your case can accomodate it, then go for it. Choose the motherboard for its specs before its size, unless you want a particular size.

Also I believe Windows 10 registers the computer's motherboard. So if you were changing the hard drive and you had already installed Windows 10, you could do a clean install of Windows 10 on the new drive straightaway, and it would activate because the computer is registered. If you're using a new motherboard, I don't know whether installing Windows 7 first would help...

oh i see, i'll have to do a clean install of 7 then jump on to 10

i have a cooler master cosmos s case so i think it takes atx and eatx mobos, theres so much to choose from, so many specs, very difficult to choose the mobo on a x99 range

Asus do a USB 3.1 add-in card, it fits into a PCI-E slot and gives you two USB 3.1 ports. I can't imagine why this would not work with non-Asus boards.

You can try reinstalling from 7, and as long as that activates with the new motherboard, you will hopefully be able to upgrade to 10.

Yes, Cosmos S will be fine with that mobo. Gigabyte are a solid choice, and the UD4P looks like one of the best budget X99 boards...
