Oculus Employees: "Preemption for context switches is best on AMD, Nvidia possibly catastrophic"

I'm not interested in Oculus as it makes me feel really ill when using it but it's good to see that they are actually addressing both sides. I don't see VR working properly for a good few years yet a bit like DX12.

True personally I think its going to go the way of 3D gaming in that its a niche market what might save it however is its not limited in the companies selling it (VR).

I like to think I'm pretty open about things, but I still can't fault Nvidia.

Is there a triple A DX12 game (by that I mean something where the extra performance matters) available or even announced?

Nope, and tbh there probably wont be for quite a while yet. I do own an NVIDIA 980ti, but I certainly didn't buy it with DX12 in mind. By the time its widely used ill more than likely be on a whole new system let alone a gpu.

I played in Nvidia 3DVision..... For less than 5 mins before saying "**** that!" and turning it off :D

Hahaha :p

I've played in Nvidia 3D, Not A.I though, VR is a totally different kettle of fish and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it, Gives FPS games like A.I a totally different feel like you're actually there :)

Keep reading about AMD being great for DX12 and VR. It's all in the future, all in promises and maybes.

It is important to think about the future, I get it, but I only care about today.
Even fury barely exist.

When VR comes out and a decent game is programmed for it, then maybe those words will be worth something.

This.

I don't know why anyone even begins to care how good the current cards are at DX12. BY the time DX12 is mainstream (ie by the time a lot of games are coded for it) we will be on the next generation(s) of cards anyway.

I mean lets face it, most on here will be buying a new card every year or two anyway so whether Maxwell or Fury can run DX12 well or not is pretty irrelevant.

Screw Alien. You want to be playing Amnesia with it ;) I could only play that in 20 minute bursts on a flat 2d screen, I wouldn't last 10 seconds playing it in VR. I think the horror genre is going to flourish in VR, it's possibly the genre that benefits most from immersion I think.

Genuinely I get so immersed in games when I play, I doubt I would have the balls to play any decent horror game in VR. I am a proper big pussy lol :D

Some people (very very weird people) like horror though.. can't understand it myself, scares the bejesus out of me =(

technically the first headset is releasing before christmas ( HTC Vive ), oculus not long after that, so it will have to be fury x vs 980Ti. However VR games are not going to be like normal games, you will either have the correct framerate or the game will be unplayable, theres no benefit from having more frames per second than the average user, the devs will make sure the framerate is locked to the device limits, that might mean that some graphics cards result in poor quality visuals though I guess. With the dev kit we have the option to change graphics quality to try and make sure it always hits the 75Hz, but for consumer version I bet they will automate it.

Full launch is in March Ash, delayed :(

Only devs are getting them Christmas-time

By the time vr is mainstream and worth it we will all be 5 years older, I doubt the preemption context switching will be a problem by that time.

That's what I'm thinking, maybe not with such a long time line though. It's great my current gpu appears to have an advantage and I'm sure that'll be beneficial for whoever I sell it too but I'll of upgraded within 2 years at the farthest so it won't really affect me much and a lot of gamers currently buying top end Nvidia hardware are in the same boat and you can bet your left gooley that Nvidia will have it fixed up and running on whatever's in there current range at that time.
