A friend of mine is looking to sell his Clio 182 Trophy with 54k on it and has offered it to me. He's selling it for genuine reasons (wants to put the money into his business) and I know it's been looked after. It's been off the road for a couple of months but still runs and needs a bit of TLC. Here's the list of things that he thinks needs doing to get it back on the road and 100%:

  1. Two front tyres: £200 (e.g., Michelin Pilot Sport 3)
  2. Refurbish the sachs dampers. He doesn't think they need doing yet but recommends it. ~£400?
  3. Front/rear brake disks/pads: ~£200? + DIY fit
  4. MOT: ~£60
  5. 50k full service: ~£600
=£1260.

For the full service he's got the oil for it and has recently changed the spark plugs. I don't mind DIYing the oil change, filters etc which would bring the cost down I imagine but I'd have to get the cam belt done properly as that's way above my skill level. Any thoughts?

Prices seem to vary wildly on these cars, and I'm told quite a lot of the second-hand ones have had the dampers replaced with the cheap ones rather than the sachs which ruins them.

It's an awesome car however, handles like it's on rails!

Isn't cambelt service at 60k on these?. I supose if you have the money no harm in getting it done early.

£60 for MoT?, i dont think i've ever paid over £30.

If the rear shocks are fine then they dont need doing.

Diamond motors in Notts for the cambelt/service. The damper refurb could well be a lot more depending on their condition.

Would probably be about £5.5-£6k in good condition with belts and dampers done.

Should be done every 33k~.

How much is he selling the car for?

100% keep the Sachs, the only reason people don't put them on and use aftermarkets is because they can't afford them. Prices do vary insanely. I sold my 182FF for £1000, but for various reasons other than it's worth.

Easy cars to work on to, or at least I found them easy to. Just keep a big hammer close by!

You'll want to get the water pump changed, along with the dephaser when doing the belt. IIRC it cost me about £340ish when I got mine done at a Renault specialist. Not worth doing on your own, the part to do the timing is close to £300 and from what I hear it's a total crap job.

I'd love a Trophy, do it. Never missed a car like I do my 182, and pretty sure I'll be a cheap one again at some point.

Cam and Aux belts are time as well as mileage based. Meant to be every 5 years, but many recommend every 3. The car should be approaching its 3rd belt change.

Can't you buy brand new dampers for not much more than £400?

Probably somewhere close to triple that, if you're lucky and if you can even get them anymore.

Just found the thread on Cliosport - £1100 per pair, and only 3 for sale in 2013. Don't think you can buy them new.

Oh, fair enough... a full set of replacement Sachs were about £600 for my E46

Then yeah... keep the Sachs and refurbish them, don't want to wreck such a sweet car with crummy dampers :)

"Refurbish the sachs dampers. He doesn't think they need doing yet but recommends it. ~£400?"

what ever you do, dont refurb them, if there is nothing wrong, some refurbs can last 30k miles before they fail

£400 if nothing wrong when they strip them down, other wise it could be as much as £1200+

BG motorsports seem to offer the best service atm, they offer upgrades which should increase their life span, i would also get the belts done, if not recently changed

have you checked it still has SACH on the rear?

Front dampers from Renault are around £1000 each!

i have never heard of doing the belts at 3 years either, it should approaching its 2nd change, unless its done insane mileage

once you have given it some love, should worth £5k

might be worth signing up to cliotrophy.co.uk they have a sticky thread on the front and rear dampers

Cam and Aux belts have different mileage intervals although both say change at 5 years. It's 36K miles on the Aux belt and I believe 72K miles on the cam belt (just checked my service book). It makes no financial sense to only change the Aux belt at 36K so most people do both. As has been said it is also best to get the water pump and dephaser done at the same time.

Do the waterpump too, it's pennies extra.

Cliosport.net is full of info too, worth signing up for the £10 a year. Dealers on there are also very cheap.

So much belt misformation in this thread...

Aux belt kit - 3 years or 36k
Cambelt kit- 5 years or 72k

Not sure I'd bother with the water pump. It's aux belt driven so not difficult to change if it goes.

Factor in doing the dephaser with the cambelt.

Sorry Amos91, Aux belt is 36k or 5 years. I checked my service book earlier on. Although some people do recommend 3 years for the Aux belt. I think it stems from a rough average mileage of 12K per year making up 36K in 3 years. In my opinion its best to get both belts changed at once to make best use of the labour charges. I'd also do the water pump due to the cost of the labour unless you are particularly proficient in doing these things yourself.

It was revised since the service book - ask any specialist.

Waiting 5 years for the aux belt is risking it, tensioner can seize relatively easily and a slip is most likely to take the cambelt with it.

On that basis, may as well do the power steering pump at the same time...

If the water pump failed (which isn't that common) you're likely only going to need to replace the belt which is £20.
