The EU Migrant Crisis

1% tax rise should do it.

For everyone? Including the people already struggling to pay rent and feed themselves?

Or are you going to target this tax increase on the highest paid? You said you wanted wealth re-distribution, so I'm going to assume here you will not force this tax increase on the lowest paid.

And that's 1% this year (assuming your figures are correct and this generates enough revenue). What about next year, and the longer term? More tax rises?

Well I'd like to see a negative income tax as well.

I would rather tax stays where it is.

Everybody would though, let's be honest.

"Would you like to earn more?" - Yes
"Would you like to keep more of what you earn?" - Yes
"Would you like things to cost less?" - Yes
"Would you like world class public services?" - Yes

They're all pointless questions when asked in isolation.

I think it started as the weather improved and then gained momentum as it starts to be reported more that people are making the journey successfully.

The higher rate bracket needs adjusting, some of us are paying far too much tax - because the bracket hasn't been adjusted for inflation over the years. LESS tax is what's required.

It only takes a simple understanding of percentages to realise if everyone pays the same percentage then those who earn more pay more. Different brackets based on income is discrimination.

It's soooo easy to spend other people's money, isn't it... Why don't the people so vocally supportive of taking economic migrants use their *own* money, not the dwindling tax revenue, to fund all this?

If 36% of people are in favour of taking in more refugees, it's hardly other people's money, is it? All these people are doing is voicing what they'd like their own tax money spent on.

Also, I'm sure that everyone in this thread who is vocally supportive of taking refugees has already donated their money and/or time.

Somebody linked a report earlier which suggested that migration is increasing due to the migrants actually becoming better off.

Ie, they are becoming more materialistic (as we undoubtedly are in the west). Perhaps it's no longer enough to have a roof over your head and sufficient to eat.

People all over the world now desire the same kind of non-essential luxuries that the west has. Be it cars, TVs, fancy trainers, or whatever.

I'm not saying we have an exclusive right to that kind of thing, but it does seem that simply escaping for your life is no longer 100% of the cause of migration.

Undoubtedly the war still has a lot to do with it, but even the BBC last night highlighted that the migrants were coming from all over the place. Including Pakistan, and other countries that - whilst not exactly secure - aren't under attack or in turmoil.

$1,268,100,000,000 was spent last year alone on defence by just the top 15 countries in the world including the UK. Fact.

A 10% reduction of that amount would generate $126,810,000,000; enough money to eradicate extreme poverty from the planet. Fact!

Is this idealistic, yes of course it is... there is no will for this to happen by our political leaders and while I'm not suggesting that defence is not important, it is of course. The fact remains that by in reducing expenditure in this area by 10% would solve one global problem, another 5% or 10% and you still have enough money to successfully develop new weapons technologies etc and fund your military exploits yet now you have a truly monumental amount of money available that can be put to ending this refugee crisis that we are partly but still directly responsible for causing! Fact!
