I believe your light level will be an average of your armours which now includes your class item and shell, and your weapons will also have light. This gets averaged and its what decides how much damage you deal/receive. So its basically exactly the same as now expect you won't be stopped from entering content, e.g. should be abled to do a NF even if your light 180 as long as your LV40, it could mean you do no damage but you can enter.

Yeah, I think Year 1 content will be 180 light, and the new cap is somewhere around 300~. From the videos I've seen the vendor stuff is 180 light, so I plan to just get marks for that and go from there, 150marks is not too bad playing crucible I believe its 6 pre win and I get through maybe 50 marks a day. Should be 280 in a week or 2.
Your light "level"* is an average of all of your gear - weapons and armour.
Basically your absolute level unlocks activities whilst the light "level" determines how powerful you will be. End game activities will have a recommended light "level" thus that is what you will aim for.
It appears vendor gear is around 280 attack/defence. Run this gear in all slots and you will have 280 light.
The Exotic sword seemed to be 310 attack thus I assume this will be the new cap. Raid gear may be at this level or ~300.
*I am using the term "level" as I can't think what else to call it.
The new system is to avoid the raid grind we had with VoG and CE, where the only thing that mattered was getting 4 pieces of raid armour, otherwise you were at a flat 33% disadvantage (which sucked).
Now you will be able to get to 40 and unlock everything, and slowly bring your light level up using vendor armour, vendor weapons, crucible weapon and armour drops, quest rewards, court of oryx stuff etc, so everyone can get there over time.
I am guessing that the normal mode raid will be balanced for 280 light, and the 300+ gear will be getting you ready for the hard mode.

I've got the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off next week. Was tempted by Tuesday to be off for the release, but I've only got 3 days I can take and I'd rather not go back into work on Friday, so Wednesday onwards it is. A couple of my other clan mates are doing the same so hopefully we can go through everything together. My plan is to be as high a level as possible for Friday evening to go into the raid.

Yeah, I reckon I'll spend a fair time on either the new strike playlist, or on the Dreadnaught doing the Court public events. Hopefully by Friday I'll be well kitted out.
