Build a new rig and give the old one to my dad, or ...?

Goal: My dad needs a new(er) computer for gaming at 1080

I was originally thinking about buying either a new Skylake or Haswell-E and giving the old rig to my dad, however a new build looks expensive for a moderate performance boost over what I have.

I'm currently running a i7 2600K with a Radeon R9 290 and game at 2560 x 1600.

I'm now thinking about looking out for a 2nd hand PC running either a 2nd, 3rd or 4th gen i5 with decent, mid-tier graphics (he's mainly into World of Tanks/Warships).

What are peoples opinions on the best bang for the buck?

I'd say keep your current setup and get the old man something cheap and second hand. I would say keep your eyes peeled in the Members Market section for a bargain but you don't have enough posts yet. So I won't. :D

The motherboard combo deal does look interesting.

It is quite probable I can recycle my dad's existing case, PSU and DVD drive, and I have a spare 500 GB SSD I can give him as well.

Just checked in with Teamviewer and the PC has a newer setup than I originally remembered:

Pentium G2120
ASRock H77 Pro4-M
2 x 4GB of PC3-10700
AMD 7770 OC GPU

I'm thinking a replacement CPU at a minimum and a new GPU at most is what's needed.

Along with my spare 500GB SSD, that should be a substantial upgrade.

Good job I asked!

Nothing wrong with that, add something like a i5-3570K and an upgraded GPU and that SSD and your good to go!

Pick up a 3570 or 3770 second hand

choice is between a R9 380 or GTX 960 (If buying new), I'm unsure what's better between the two as I haven't researched those two cards.

And if he doesn't have one an SSD and enjoy a PC that will last a good couple of years.

Looking around on the second hand market, The GTX 780 have come down to your budget which would be a substantial upgrade graphics wise.

Better to build yourself a BEAST, give your old machine to your Dad, stick the cost on your credit card and worry about paying for it tomorrow. There's no feeling as good as switching on a new rig for the first time and playing games with all of the graphics settings turned up to 11 lol
