How can an iPad Mini 2 be faster than some thing like a Nexus 7 with only a dual core CPU and 1GB RAM

I was considering getting a iPad Mini 2 but don't understand why a device that costs so much only has 1GB ram

The software doesn't need huge specs like a lot of Android devices have, then there's the Apple logo tax as well which adds to the cost.

cost - apple tax, some would argue it's a better product though although personally I question that

performance - In essence apple supports a limited number of hardware configurations so the whole os is very very optimised for their limited range of products. Having said that Apple usually artificially nerfs a products performance after a couple of os updates even though the hardware is still good enough in most cases.

Android like windows supports considerably more hardware configs and also runs the core os differently.

Definitely be careful after a couple years of updates but there's no conspiracy behind the degrading performance. Apple simply moves a device down the priority order as it grows older so that newer users get more toys to play with.

iOS is pretty light, and from what I've noticed a more agressive RAM management.

Do not doubt the SoC even if it's only dual core. Those Cyclone cores are very strong performers, perhaps significantly better performance per clock than the Krait cores found in the N7. If anything Apple seems to be doing right, it's their custom CPU designs.

Not to mention there's not that many different iOS devices to cater for, making it far more easier to optimize the OS for each device.

The mini 2 is a cracking piece of kit ...if you like Apple products.I bought one for my missus last xmas, cost £240 on black friday.
On the other hand I bought myself a Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 for £150 which is the equal of the mini 2 in everything but battery life....and I prefer the screen aspect ratio

What other tablets should I consider? Is the nexus 7 still a decent
how much do you want to spend?

I'd personally be looking at an MS Surface 3 or surface pro 4 (when it's released, not that SP3 is bad or anything)

Have a look at the Nvidia Shield Tablet. Similar form factor to the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 but seriously, seriously fast.
