Ok i want some info on monitors if you kind folks can help.

what is the best type of screen to go for currently i have an acer GDH45HQ 120Hz screen,,,
i am building a rig with a 980ti card 8 pack edition..
and im looking at a new monitor but no clue what to get.
and i have a few questions...
A: do i go 4K and run my games at 60fps?
B: do i go with a curved screen like some of the new acer screens coming up soon.. with 34" im unsure about how these screens will play with them being so narrow and huge black borders?
will it suck and can it run 100fps? on latest type games at high settings
c: i hate vsync .... so should i even bother with gsync ?
d: can you run freesync on a non nvidia card?
i personally want a 144hz 1440p screen.. for the extra fps in games,
but how good is 4K at 60fps does it suck in comparison to more fps?
or is it about the same experience...
i liked the look of the new benQ screen but its 1080? but has better hz?
really confused as to why you cant get a 4k screen with 144hz or 120hz..?
anyone got any advise... :)
choosing is driving me mad
budget prob £700-£800

A) I wasn't too fond of 4k to be honest, went to 21:9 Ultrawide and it's epic.

B) What do you play? Honestly, a lot of games have 21:9 support now.

C) 3440x1440 is ~40% less pixels than 4k, so if you can maintain 60 FPS on 4k (possible with high settings on most games, maybe not ultra), you should be able to maintain 100 FPS on Ultrawide 1440p. Don't forget, the Acer X34 has GSync too.

D) No.

I have never played using GSync or >60 FPS, so I cannot answer the rest of your thread, but nothing captures immersion quite like 21:9.

You cannot get a 4K screen with 120/144Hz as DisplayPort cannot handle the bandwidth, yet. DisplayPort 1.3 (yet to be released, really) should be able to handle higher refresh rates at 4k, however it won't be 144Hz if I remember correctly.

i play a lot of team fortress 2
used to play at high competitive level at Multiplay and such
so yeah i like quick response and no ghosting
will my 8 pack 980ti card handle one of the new screens?
at high settings or will i need to SLI two of them?

so what about the new Acer Predator XR341CK
?
or the new BenQ XR3501 35"
and aside those two the only other screen that looks ok but has a lot of bad press is the other Acer Predator XB270HU 27" G-Sync IPS 144Hz
these are the 3 screens i had been looking at.

Monitor Priorities in order. Assuming a few things like you have a screen thats actually been through QC, 60HZ.

Resolution. Higher the better, as long as you have the system to power it. Some people will say ah but blah blah. Ignore them.

Panel type. Anything not TN and you are good. Again people will ah but 1ms. Ignore them people too.

Next I would say warranty. If you spend big you should get a long time from your screen.

Latency. The lower the better but sub 10MS give or take is just fine.

Next, refresh rate. 60Hz is good but really I've found around 80 is the better place to be. Over this and you really can't notice anything and it's not worth bumping up the importance list at the cost of anything else. Some will say 144Hz FTW! ignore them.

Fit price in as required and avoid Acer and possibly LG.

IMO the best the monitors the world has to offer right now, is the Asus MG279Q, the Dell Ultra wide U3415W bought from Dell direct over the phone with some haggling or the AMH A399U direct from Korea.

The Acer XR341CK is FreeSync, so that technology is not compatible with your 980Ti. The Acer Predator X34 is due out in October and it's the exact same monitor aside from it having 25Hz higher refresh rate (100Hz on the X34, 75Hz on the XR341CK), and GSync rather than FreeSync.

The BenQ has a rather low resolution for a £700 panel, that could more be personal preference though. For £200 more I'd rather wait 2 months, take the 44Hz less refresh rate and get the X34 from Acer.

I'm going to agree with Jigger regarding the best monitors, the U3415W was a stunning purchase for me, I've only had it 6 hours but I have fallen in love with it.

In all honesty what Jigger said is good to go, aside from the resolution. I honestly think 3440x1440 is superior to 3840x2160, but that is all personal preference at the end of the day. If you are worried about 21:9, refer to this thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18607905 - or, failing that, a quick Google should tell you whether X, Y and Z games are compatible.

Hope we've helped so far.

Yeah thanks for the help guys
My only issues are if I get a DELL,AOC 3840x2160
None of these panels have gsync. So I worry how it will make the games play
Unsmooth,jaggy edges etc.
And if I blow 1000 quid on an acer will my 980TI stutter running it.
And I feel disappointed my god gaming exp is poor due to lack of frame rate
So confused

A 980Ti will not struggle to run 3440x1440. A 980Ti can handle 3840x2160 just fine, and 3440x1440 is 40% less pixels to push, so the card will manage easily.

I have never used G-Sync so I try not to argue for or against it.

I have a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980Ti and I have a very enjoyable gaming experience at 3440x1440 - I have a subpar CPU so I am sure I am getting CPU bottlenecked in some games too.

With the Acer X34 it has G-Sync which eliminates the tearing from high frame rates, as well as eliminating the stutter from VSync, so you should be fine. It also has a 100Hz panel so you will actually be able to experience the higher frame rates you will get from the 980Ti.

You have CCR on your side, so if you do spend £950 on the Acer, you can try it for a few days and send it back if you are not too fond.

thanks for that joe.
yes it is a lot of money for a monitor,
but also i want a smooth good experience mainly playing fps games i want a decent fps
i had thought of going down the route of a 1440p monitor the 27" acer panel.
and then getting a second 980TI card,
but i think with a new dp 1.3 ultimately coming soon and a new gcard in the pipeline the investment was not worth it for 2x 980 TI cards.
however my only other concern is this panel at 950 quid and only dp 1.2 and im guessing 1.3 not that far off ..
is this monitor purchase a bad idea?
i know there are no reviews on the acer predator curved monitor yet well not the g sync version.
the freesync version of this curved panel has not had a very impressive review on the tft central website.
so i hope the g sync version is all they say it is meant to be.
monitor purchasing right now is the biggest headache
especially at the cost.
:) monitor lottery.

i will be running the new 1151 z1z0 motherboard 4.5 gig skylake 6700
and i went with the KFA 8 pack hof edition graphics card.
With 16gig ddr4 3000mhz ram
it should be ok for gaming
it is just all about fps and i really dislke low fps and lag.
although my current screen is a 1080p acer 120hz panel

Your rig is not going to have trouble with anything up to, and including 4k at the moment. It will struggle at 4k to the extent that you can't run ultra everything, but high should be fine.

4k 60Hz is the highest possible due to DP 1.2 as you've stated. As DP1.3 isn't really mainstream I can imagine it will be a long time before manufacturers start utilising the benefits of DP1.3, such as higher refresh rates at 4k, etc... I am not the person to ask on that though, try Baddass or someone :p

If you are used to 120Hz now, I've seen a lot of people say that 60Hz is choppy, even for day to day use, after dropping down from 144Hz... So it's up to you.

I agree with the monitor purchasing being a headache, and I am not particularly the best person to ask as I have not had experience with technologies such as G Sync or high refresh rates :(

pulled the trigger

thanks Joe!
well i pulled the Trigger i purchased the predator g sync
- vat its come in at £791
so i hope when it comes it will be good.
and no issues
sitting on the fence to long but yeah ive not had ultrawide before so this
will be a new experience for me.
oh and my desk is only 62cm deep
so i hope its not to in your face it will be close viewing
:)

I think the Acer X34 has the POTENTIAL to be pretty epic, the only issue is going to be the QC, given the complete lack of it on their XB270HU. If they're using the same production line and process for the X34, I will be extremely worried, but I hope they've learned their lesson. For the sake of everyone forking over a grand for this monitor, I sincerely hope so anyway!

To tell you the truth I have lost faith all together with the current ridiculous IPS lottery for monitors in general. I don't think it so much of just an Acer issue anymore, as buy IPS monitor may it be Acer or Asus or LG, you'd still have risk of getting sting by IPS glow issue and get equally poor support.

I just hope a VA panel Ultrawide 21:9 with high refresh rate (at least 75Hz) and 1440 res will come along soon.

I know exactly what you mean... there are good examples out there, and when IPS works, it works GREAT, but you're not wrong to say it's one big lottery. Unacceptable on every level really, and if we had this kind of situation with GPUs, motherboards or any other component, there would literally be riots in the streets. Yet with monitors, not only do the re-sellers and manufacturers tell us to deal with it and accept things the way they are, but many customers do just that, receiving monitors with bad IPS glow and a couple of stuck/dead pixels and decide to keep them anyway... baffles me... it's like we're being brainwashed.

We do have rights though, we just need to exercise them, and the less accepting we are of the faults many so-called 'premium' monitors suffer with, the more likelihood there is of the situation improving. It's all financially driven at the end of the day.

Yes quality control
It's a thing of the past in this day and age
My old acer panel has lasted a good 6+ years
Not a single issue
Compared to all the company's now and people's issue
It's like winning the lottery and getting the frigging bonus ball. :)
But we have 14 day purchase retuend at least
So if it sucks it goes back
Problem solved :)

I really want a 21:9 3440x1440 IPS screen but the lack of quality control is putting me off, still running 3 x Dell 2407FPWs ;)
