Travel insurance after you are on a trip

I am not really sure you should be looking for Travel Insurance. You might be better off looking for something more suited to an Expat. Expat medical is a term used in the industry.

would have assumed he'd need something like this from the start

I'd question whether the current one covers him properly anyway - if it is just some general annual travel insurance designed for a couple of holidays/business trips a year then it might not even cover winter sports let alone what has been mentioned in the OP:

what I am doing here is quite dangerous and so if something goes wrong I could need medical help.

I mean if things like bungee jumping and skiing are excluded from lots of these properties I'd check whether this dangerous work in the middle east is too

I'd advise picking up the phone and speaking to a specialist broker. You're going to struggle getting the cover you want in the open market.

If you buy a new annual policy, does it matter? They are designed to cover you all year round for any travel.

For those struggling with this, most annual policies have a limit on the maximum length of any trip - which is typically anywhere between 30 and 60 days. Once you have been abroad for longer than this, then you're no longer covered.

The OP appears to have managed to get a policy which allows him to be out of the country for up to 90 days at a time, but he is now coming to the end of that period. His annual cover has not expired, he has just exceeded one of the common limitations of the policy. Purchasing a new annual policy will not help him with this, as his current 'trip' has already lasted for more than 90 days. He needs to use a specialist insurer who allows for extended periods of time abroad and also are prepared to cover him mid-way through an existing trip.

This is spot on.

Thanks for the links, I called Navigator but they say there is a 2 week deal before the policy will start I will try some of the others or a brokers. If I have no luck I will just fly home for the weekend. It would be nice to see my dog.

I don't need Expat medical (I had this for the past 15 years) but I am now UK based it just happened this time I was out of the uk for more than 90 days but normally I will make a short trip home.

My annual travel insurance does cover me, as long as I don't go over 90 days for a single trip which I don't normally, it covers both business and personal travel. Im in Asia not the middle east and generally its not dangers only this time due to some unusually factors.

You need a proper insurance policy if you want to remain outside the UK for over 90 days as this not what typical holiday based travel insurance is for.

Yes this is true, there is one company that allows 180 days but for me normally 90 days is enough. Its the first time its happened that I have not made at least a short trip to the uk. I was only supposed to be here a few days but I am still stuck here. Its hot, dirty and I have no AC :D

a: I'd like to buy an holiday insurance please.
a: Ps, I'm on holiday
b: Click here to pay Sir.
/click
a: Pps, I've broken my legs.

:p

What amazes me is that you claim to run a business but can't see that there is no way a business can offer travel insurance policies AFTER the trip has started.

It's like signing up for the RAC after you have broken down.

oh wait another house look at me I'm abroad for 90 days bragging thread

I'm surprised no one else notices these.

Get your friend or a family member to take one out from the UK for you.

Commence your start date for in about 2 days. Whats the problem its easy enough to sort out. Just don't get injured in the next 2 days. :p

Bragging that he's in a third world country? Sounds like you've got it sussed.

There seems to be a lot of talk about "Travel" insurance - You are abroad working. This is way outside the realms of "Travel Insurance" and unless you specifically had it in your terms that it would cover you for working then I doubt your policy would have even covered you from the first day you left?

sorry meant to type asia there, was also going to add something to that post about how for example a security contractor in the middle east probably couldn't rely on this sort of policy then edited it and got muddled

anyway the point is I'd make sure this danger that is known in advance is covered by a standard policy that is really aimed at people going on holiday or 'business' as in going to meetings/conferences/sitting behind a desk etc..
