Have I got a defective Samsung U28E850R? ##Solved##

Hi all,

Been having some issues with my U28E850R. I'm trying to run it on 2x Sapphire R290 Vapors in crossfire but I am getting some major freeze frame and the Freesync mode does nothing.

The only way I can get it to work without any skipping is by connecting it with the DVI/HDMI connection, but the Freesync doesn't work with this cable connection and the whole reason I got this monitor was to use Freesync. And I get the frame freezing issue with both the HDMI-to-HDMI and the Mini DP-to-DP connections.

AMD site confirms my cards support Freesync monitors witht he latest drivers. And I downloaded the drivers for the screen from Samsungs site too.

I've only tested it with GTAV, and plan to do some trial and error at the weekend - ie. try it on each card alone and also on another PC with Win 7 on and i'll stick the 290's in there (currently running it on Win 10 with latest drivers* - not the Beta that got released last week though).

Has anyone had any issues with these screens or can anyone recommend anything else I could try with getting it to work?

My rig is:
Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz
Corsair Hydro H110
Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3
2x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X 4096MB GDDR5
Samsung 500GB SSD
SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1200W
Windows 10 64 bit

Thanks in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you haven't tried connecting from the card's DP port to the monitor's DP port have you?

Freesync NEED to use DP connection in order to work.

Sorry, missed that off the list or didn't put it clearly- yep I have connected the mini-DP cable end to the monitor and the DP end to the card (DP connection is a few mm wider than a HDMI port). And with the HDMI to HDMI cable I've conencted that on the 60hz port on the back of the screen.

Basically i've used all three of the cables (one at a time) that came with the monitor trying to get it set up and working.

Have you tried running only one of your GPUs? It could be a FreeSync CrossFire issue.

Only got round to trying the DP cable with only one GPU installed and still had the issue. Plan is to try it with the HDMI/HDMI cable and DVI/HDMI on the card that is in at the moment, then swap with the other card and try again with each of the three cable connections.
And if the problem is there, i'll take the cards out, remove the drivers and install the drivers for the onboard MB graphics* with whatever ports are on the MB - can't remember at the moment (*wont be able to test the freesync though but can see if the freezeframe issue persists).

Thank you both for the quick responses!

try and do a master reset on your monitor

Have a free evening tonight so will pick up where I left off with the trial and error and your recommendations and report back.

AMD still not have a freesync ready driver for crossfire .Its 100% driver issue, you have to wait for the AMD support. In this time only single gpu working with freesync monitor.

From what I have read, Catalyist 15.7 enabled Freesync on Crossfire set up and thats been in place since July? I couldn't find any recent posts to suggest its not working?

Good news!- got it working at last.
Seemed it was a GPU driver error as I couldn't get Catalyst to open at all. It took me over an hour to uninstall the AMD drivers as it wasn't uninstalling as it should the normal way (prety sure it was caused by Windows 10 auto-updating the GPU drivers), ended up having to delete folders, force stop 4 AMD programs that were still running from task bar and then clear any trace through Regedit. Took both cards out, restarted, then put one back in and hooked up the screen (after doing a factory reset from the OSD) via the mini-DP cable and turned on Freesync. Installed the 15.8 beta driver, finally got Catalyst up and running and it recognised the Freesync screen straight away on the restart, then put the second card in and turned on Crossfire with all other settings left at default. All up and running!

However... adjusted a few settings in GTAV and was still getting the freezeframe issue at the start, but it only lasted for about a minute and after causing some Trevor style mayhem to get as much going on to get both cards working evenly the freezeframe issue stopped? Also, had to turn v-sync back on as I was getting tearing even with Freesync. With it on I was getting a fluid 60fps and the game looked a hell of a lot better than on my old 24' Dell monitor, but I need to play around with the sharpness and brightness as I was seeing a lot of halo effects against objects with the sky in the back ground.
Had a quick game on Carmageddon Reincarnation and had to turn v-sync off as it was jumping about all over the place.
As I understood it, Freesync is supposed to esentially do what v-sync does at the screen end as opposed to the GPU so you can turn off v-sync? So i'm assuming for now that the freezeframe thing is a GTAV issue. There's an update due soon so maybe it will be addressed with that.
Eitherway, relativley happy for the moment now i've got it set up. I've got just over 2 weeks left to return the screen if I'm not completely happy with it so i'm going to load up BF4, Far Cry 4 and WatchDogs over the weekend and see how they look.

Thanks again for the advice guys, Overclockers forums to the rescue as always!
