Nvidia: Sales of high-end GeForce GTX GPUs are increasing

It is not a secret that sales of discrete graphics processing units for personal computers are decreasing. In the second quarter of the year shipments of graphics cards for desktop computers dropped to the minimum level in many years. Despite of this, shipments of graphics cards used by gamers are increasing, according to Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of GeForce business unit at Nvidia Corp.

One of the key reasons why sales of low-end graphics processing units are getting lower is increasing performance of graphics processors integrated into modern central processing units. Ten years ago, integrated graphics processors were incapable of delivering decent performance even in casual games, but today they offer fine frame-rates in a lot of games. As a result, people no longer need low-end graphics cards for desktop computers.

However, more and more people are buying GeForce GTX GPUs to play video games, according to Jeff Fisher, who spoke with Japanese 4Gamer.net web-site. Mr. Fisher claims that new-generation game consoles do not threat sales of discrete graphics adapters, but actually help to popularize games and GeForce GPUs.

So the lower end is dropping off while people are using their IGPUs for gaming but high end GTXs sales are picking up. This quite surprises me in truth and quite different to how I was expecting the majority of people to game.

We are but a small drop of water in a vast ocean. :(

Strange really coz at least 80% of everyone I know is a gamer. :D

all sales speak.

lol most of games i tested for which is many dont even cater for 4k lol.

its hugeeeee :D

Sales on 1440P and 4k is actually huge, not low by any standards. 1080P is now selling less.

Can you see a time soon when the standard will move on from 1080? Personally I think it will happen when they put out the new consoles, with beefy specs for VR, as that is what's trendy. So 2018-2020 would be my guess.

OcUK *alone* selling 6k (15k inc Caseking!) of the Ti really surprised me tbh, damn good strong seller!!! AMD not being able to get any quantity of the Fury cards out has really helped nVidia it seems...

1080 will be the standard for 5 years plus yet. or until next consoles can run the next res. which wont be 4k.

The only people I know with anything above a GTX970 or R9 290 are a few benchmarkers.

If anything I am suprised "only" 15k GTX980TI were sold by the whole of Caseking including OcUK when Caseking sells cards all over Europe, including some of the richest PC gaming markets in the world. Caseking is one of the largest enthusiast orientated retailers in Europe and remember in the UK,OcUK had more GTX980TI stock than many competitors too.

That is a tiny drop in the ocean when compared to the 10s of millions of PC gamers out there.

I expect the vast majority of sales are still under £300 like they have been for years.

The thing is most people still want the best bang to buck product rather than a few fps more in game, most people is fine to play at medium. Compare to like 10years back, it is not that noticeable to play between medium / high / ultra.
I would bet 970 is the best seller in the 900 series.

That's quite a sad thought, but I think this generation is when PC gaming will flourish and be recognised (to a greater degree) as not only a valid platform by other gamer types, but the truly elite platform on which to game.

I firmly believe that 4k gaming is going to a) pull a lot of console gamers into this market and b) drive the console manufacturers to deliver new hardware sooner. This couldn't have worked with 1440p as the standard because it's not a TV standard.

Caseking is based in Germany and is one of the largest in Germany for enthusiast products like OcUK is one of the largest in the UK.

Both OcUK and Caseking ship to Europe, however each individual European country has its own dedicated distributors and resellers. So even though our group ships worldwide our primary business is UK and Germany. :)

I would agree - I reckon that Nvidia/AMD know this and will always drop their VFM product about 8-12 months after their high-end, giving you the same performance for a much more reasonable price.

Don't you think a lot of the pick-up is catered for by SLI enthusiasts? It makes a new potential customer out of every GPU sold. Quite ingenious tbh.

This is my line of thoughts too. Consoles will probably be when we will see higher resolutions getting more adaptation. I don't even think this gen of consoles will last as long as the old gen did. Knock off a few years and we will see the next gen come through with higher resolutions. What Res that will be is not clear yet but most likely UHD or rather 4k which seems like the most significant res jump. It's not quite there yet in performance but give it another 5 - 6 years and they will be able to put the parts into console form factor to power 4k gaming.

You have to think though, with the release of the R9 and issues encountered, and speaking from experience here, those who have issues start to loose faith in the vendor and want something that works - nVidia. I changed my R9 290 for a pair of GTX Titans and didn't have a single issue - upgraded to a 980Ti and it was just as incredible.

While AMD 'may' produce cards which gamers are happy with, you get what you pay for an those who do pay out get "exactly what is says on the tin". A quality product which is unrivalled.

It will be UHD/4k as that is what the next step up in TV's is and most consoles are hooked up to TV's.
What sort of performance a console is going to need to drive UHD, well I reckon APU's with 980/390x type performance so a good few years yet.
