Behind you... Naked!
I have tried a couple of the basic CPU only sealed water setups, I have even bodged one to fit a quad radiator onto it, but the TEMPs on the CPU still shoot past 70c and the system is completely unuseable at anything over idle due to the temps going too high.

Case cooling is fine, ands with my 8350 in there, its a good 33/34c loaded up, but the 9590 seem to be drastically hotter for some reason?

What is the best air cooler out there? Noctua? Swifttech? Any suggestions?

8350 has a TDP of 125w compared to 9590 having a TDP of 220w. That is a huge amount of additional heat.

But without knowing what your case's CPU clearance, RAM height and PCIe distance from center CPU socket are it's almost impossible to make suggestions .. because we have no idea what will fit. :D

Oh, Swiftech is water cooling, not air.

My case is a thermaltake Armor.

There is plenty of space for pretty much any cooler I could need to use I think... Indeed, even if it comes to the crunch, my Lian Li v1000 is almost finished and I could use that?

"Swiftech is water."
Of course it is... I just entered the first names that came into my head!!!

I use a single fan Be Quiet Dark Rock on my 8350 which is OCd to 4.7 and it works brilliantly, completely silent, for yours I would consider a the dual fan version, looks great too

Assuming you have Armor Revo you have 180mm CPU clearance.
I think the very best are Silver Arrow IB-E & SB-E Extreme and HE01. But only because they have extreme fans with almost twice the airflow of others .. and noise levels if used above normal rpm levels to match.

Some other top air coolers are PH-TC14PE, R1 Ultimate, Silver Arrow IB-E, NH-D15, , etc. .. followed closely by NH-D14, TRUE Spirit 140 Power & Rev.A, Archon IB-E, NH-U14S, etc.

Equally as important to cooler is case airflow supplying cool air to it (and GPI) and removing their heated exhaust without it contaminating the cool air supply. Accomplishing this is often harder than any other part of a system build.

I suspect the 200mm fans in your case are not moving much air. Most do not.

My Armor is the original big bugger, it has 120mm front and back, and 92mm back and top.

I have not used the 92mm for yonks, but the 120mm of course, as the front blows over the HDs and the back is used for the RAD.

Airflow is pretty good, I have already gone through the hell and high water of making the air flow through the case as good as I can get it.

Among the silly toys I have bought recently, the Corsair Carbide Case is a nice one that I may use for this to replace the Armor... Its smaller, but it seems to be well laid out, plus it has even better cooling potential with 5x 120mm positions.

Also, I have bought the Noctua NH-D14 ( Oh bugger - was I supposed to get the D15? ) but thats set to arrive in the morning, so I will see what that can do for me as well.

Annoyingly, the 8350 has clocked to some silly heights and it never given me half the trouble that this 9590 has given me thats for sure!

NH-D14 is a great cooler, and even better with fans with performance similar to the NF-A15 1500rpm that is on the NH-D15 .. probably as good as NH-D15 or so close it would be hard to tell the difference.

This is how I monitor air temperature different places inside of case:
  • A cheap indoor/outdoor thermometer with a piece of insulated wire and a plastic clothspin works great.
  • Made up with floral wire and tape. We don't want anything to short out with metal. ;)
    e65759c3-fbf9-414f-9f1f-f5941d540397_zps2fe90c77.jpg
  • Clip and position sensor where I want to check the temp. Make it easy to see what the air temp going into components actually is relative to room temp. ;)
  • When system is working air temps going into coolers will be 2-3c warmer than room.. up to about 5c is okay.

Thats all not a bad idea really. I did mod an old Fridge temp gague a while back... I might do one again maybe?

Im not too happy with myself right now...

I have just had the PC on its side, I took off the AIO and its an ALPENFOHN.
Anyway, I cleaned it all up, brushed it all and got rid of all the cack, and then I set about with the 9590, and the Noctua cooler... hang on!... The sodding thread is different on teh screws to the back plate?? - Bloody bugger.
I got tons of long bolts that are perfect to replace these that will fit in the backplate, but they are in the attic...

I am so bloody annoyed, and so I have put the 8350 back in again along with the AIO. Anyway, I remember reading in the little booklet that if you dont have a backplate, then contact Noctua, and so I grabbed the booklet and had a brose, only to read that the backplate provided in the Intel bag, is a multi backplate and it will work for all CPU types... OFFS!!!!

I really am a bloody lemon at times.

Sod it... I have had enough of me for tonight... I will do it tomorrow.

Anyway, for what its worth, I am looking at the SpeedFan display and its showing me the 8350 is now at a nice and snug 24c idle and stock, so at least cleaning out the Rad properly has had some bonus I s'poze?

Good thing I wasn't sipping on my coffee when I read that. :D
The old 4 steps forward and 3 steps back. :p

I like the simple indoor /outdoor because I can see both room and cooler intake air temps .. and as a bonus mine also logs the low and high in memory. I prefer the probe be plastic as then there is no chance of shorting anything. Worst case it it gets caught in a fan.

Tell me about it.

Its irritating for the best of us, but for me, its a little worse than most because I am in a wheelchair, I can get about on the floor sorta-kinda but not easily, and the TT Armor case is a huge steel bugger that aint the lightest box that I have seen, so its a swine to work with.

Also, as for getting at the back-plate, in many cases, you can simply get at it, via the other side, but this case does NOT have a hole in the motherboard panel, so its a complete mobo out job in order to do it.

Obviously, that means all the cards and connectors etc, so its not the quickest job, and what if the cooling isnt all that much?
What if this beast is too heavy?

I am actually seriously considering a flat case now! - Check out the Core X9... Im actually considering that... I dont yet know if it has enough room for this cooler.

Its getting real bad when all I wanted wasa tiny bit more bang for my buck out of this 8350 and now that I think of it, my 8350 clocks higher than the 9590 will go, and with the same cooler and less power.

Buying this 9590 has not only cost me £180 for the cip itself, but another £60 for the cooler that I did not think I needed, and now I may be looking at another case just because I dont like the thought of such a massive cooler pulling on the Motherboard, and the case is almost £300!!! - in total, I am looking towards the £500 markl and yet I am going to be no better off than I am now!

And its not even my main PC!!!!

Do you recon its time to cut my losses LOL?

This one, etc etc

Its a beauty sure enough, but I have just bought the Noctua HN-D14 and I have had a look and a play and it does / will fit fine into the setup I have.

Here are a couple of pics on my domain - you probably have to click cos I have just checked them up and I cant be bothered to link properly.

The cooler is only placed there, minus fans and brackets etc, just to get an idea before I mess around too deep.

Just after this, I gave up, put it all back together and cried like a baby.

Guess I should not have said steps but rolls. Sorry, poor attempt at humor. :(

What you have is working and the weight of cooler on mobo is not a problem at all. That said, in your situation I would use a case that stays on desk with easy access to everything. There are lots of case options besides flat ones with big footprints .. in both flat and vertical motherboard configuration. Maybe something like the Lian Li PC-A05FN is 210x385mmx500mm at 9.7lbs. Fractal Design Core, Arc & Define series have compact ATX cases .. Phanteks are a little bigger but are very well built and user friendly. Keep in mind the smaller the case the harder it is to work inside of. I prefer something big enough to work in without too many problems.

The SST-HE01 while not well known is a very good cooler and it's FHP-141 fan is quiet at low RPM while at high speed delivers a huge amount of air for extreme cooling (and noise). I have not used it, but would love to run it against other top coolers.

I'm sure there are many more, but I haven't kept up with smaller case sizes.

I went from a custom water loop on NB and CPU to the HE01 air cooler and stock heatsinks, to tell the truth, there is not a huge amount of difference.

My water loop was not ideal I admit with only a 240 radiator so probably equivalent to a good AIO. Too much hassle though.

I find that the NB on the crosshair V does get a bit toasty at 45C typical, but the CPU unless heavily loaded stays in the 35 to 40C range.

I like the 9590 over my 8350 because of the stock 4.7 and turbo 5.0GHz at 1.41 V and I got it on special offer at £139.99. There is a bit of OC headroon, but not a lot.

Windows 10 also seems to have made a difference, difficult to prove, but it feels so.

Cases etc

None of those cases take my fancy.

I have done a case question earlier on, but I am only thinking now, of the Thermaltake Core X9 because it houses the Mobo on the flat.

I have had huge coolers before sure... I got a dual rad one in a PC in the attic, but thats nowhere near as heavy as this Noctua one I got is though.

Im quite exited however, cos the Media Center has a 1090T in there, and its cooler is a half decent fanless job... The Mobo is only a Gigabyte 970, but it loves the 8350 and so I am now hoping to put the 1090T to pasture, and the Media Center can have this 8350 with the Alpenfohn cooler... It fits deliciously inside the Zalman MediaPC Case.

There is something missing from those pics.
Makes me question whether you have ever used this or not?

Where is the dust? LOL

Are these pics taken right after you just built it?
Can I have pics of it right now?

You've got them :) taken last night.

My wife is quite assiduous with the vac. Build was about seven months ago in February, so not too long. I also think the airflow is quite sorted with 2 x 140mm in front and 3 x 120mm at top and back. Case is a Lian Li PC-7HA.

You're welcome, andy.

Weeeeell Enough is certainly enough..

My 8350 clocks like a charm.
I got the 9590 so I could do these speeds without clocking ( well... )

Because the 9590 gets so hot I have had to buy a huge whacking fan...
The Noctua HN-D14 weighs about 17 stone. I know its fine in the case, but I dont like the idea of having something THAT big pulling on my Mobo.

I have decided to search for a Case that lets me lie the Mobo down.
I found the Thermaltake Core X9 Snow Edition

Today the Core X9 arrived.
Well actually it was those idiots in DPD so the ycould not find my address and so I went to the local depot to get it myself.
I knew it would be big... But its depth is really extreme

I have fit my PC and its gubbins intop an alcove in my house but thet case would be poking out by a good 7 or 8 inches more than the Armor already is, and with my wheelchair after that, it would mean that the room to get past me, is going to vanish.

I have decided... Ok, let me refresh that... My wife has decided that it is NOT happening.

I bought a Lian Li case thats in the hallway because it sticks out too far.
I bought a Thermaltake Mozart TX thats too tall, and is now in the attic.
This would be PC Case number 3 that will be bought and not used, and the wife has had enough of my spending.

What is worse, is that when she realised its for my AMD and not for my new SkyLark, she flipped her lid.

So, after all of this, I am sticking ti the Alpenfohn AIO cooler and the good old 8350 that is currently just for kicks, clocked at 4.8hz and its a fairly toasty 57c which is ridiculous becuase I have not had it this speed and get to the desktop before, but I have put the Mushkin back in, so...
