Nintendo NX: Why Not Having An Optical Drive Could Potentially Work In The Big N’s Favor

The last this we need is another identical platform to the XBO/PS4.

Nintendo do things differently, and that's great in an otherwise stagnant market.

Exactly i don't mind not having the best hardware, as long as they come up with something fun & get the 3rd party developers back i think they will do ok.

Improvements needed are the downloaded games should be linked to account not console, online needs bit improvement friends chat, party chat voip etc.

Imagine Zelda, Mario Galaxy and an F - zero on hardware more powerful than ps4/xbone. Where do I sign for that. Hell even Pikmin 4 would be even more immense.

True but if you look at Wii U graphics for Mario Kart its still pretty darn nice considering the hardware. I'm really glad i bought a Wii U I was put off at first, but as soon as i got my hands on it i was impressed. I just hope they the follow Sonys footsteps and make it easy for developers to develop games on the console.

I would be happy if the NX had pro controller with analog triggers, and improved Wii remote/numb chuck.

I see the Wii U (and before it the Wii) as a great second console to play their exclusives, but not everyone is willing to shell out on more than one home console and in that regard Nintendo are onto a loser.

Third party support is critical, people want CoD, GTA and FIFA, I don't want Nintendo to be a carbon copy of Sony/MS but they need to get this stuff as well as offering their own amazing games on a decent spec machine and then they'd be a true competitor.

I've been listening to the RadioFreeNintendo podcast and they've jokingly being saying it's "the summer that's too hot for games" as bugger all has been coming out, they've had to go back to the Virtual Console just to have something to talk about until Mario Maker.

The spec I want for NX is way better than X1 / PS4.

Nintendo did things differently with the Wii U, look how that has worked out.

They need decent hardware to attract third party developers, Nintendo games alone aren't generating enough hardware sales. Obviously, look at the numbers..

Nintendo need hardware parity (At least) or preferably better.

Another gimmicky console is the last thing I would be interested in, the numbers speak for themselves, it's time to stop skimping on hardware and deliver great games on great hardware, and get third party developer support back.

they need third party games on this console, otherwise it's WiiU MKII with only the blind Nintendo faithful buying the thing.

For third party games they need to be on the same level performance if not more than the PS4/Xbox One.

Nintendo are becoming irrelevant, the Nintendo fans wont like me saying that because they cannot accept that fate for their dearly beloved company.

+1

Exactly, it's not just about Nintendo games, they need decent hardware to attract third party developers back. More games means more people that might be attracted to the console. Nintendo games alone obviously aren't enough as Wii U sales have been dismal, despite some really great games.

Luckily you're not their target audience.

Do they have a target audience?

Or is it the 30+ something hipster with his rose tinted spectacles who loves what Nintendo WERE back when he was a wee lad playing games on his NES?

It's like Nintendo fans like being part of this "exclusive"/"elite" Nintendo hardware owners club and scoff at anyone else who may actually want to own their hardware but find their practices appaling and the appeal of the hardware lacking, and the reaction is "Well, you're not their target audience". It's alsmot as bad as people who have the PC master race chip on their shoulder.

What they're doing sounds interesting. I personally believe that there's no point to try and match PS4/Xbone specs. If the game is fun and it looks good enough without impacting the gameplay then its fine. I spent a good hour on tetris today. Didn't have any cinematic scenes or DLC though, so its just not a good game, right?.

Years have already gone by...it wouldn't take that much for Nintendo to come out with a more powerful system.

I certainly agree with everyone saying the console needs to be more powerful than the PS4 / Xbox One.

It'll be released (at the earliest) 2nd half of 2016 but probably 2017. Nintendo games are awesome which is the reason I just bought a Wii U but I still have my PS4 and gaming PC for playing serious games. If the new Nintendo console has the same third party support as the PS4 or Xbox One then I can retire my PS4 to another room and just get all my console gaming on the Nintendo system. With the addition of virtual console titles so I can play NES / SNES / N64 games on it I'd be really happy. If I could also play my Wii U games on it as well I'd be over the moon.

The other thing that I think a lot of people are missing are the large numbers of people that use their PS4 or Xbox One as their main Blu-ray and DVD player. I certainly do. If Nintendo won't support playing Blu-rays or DVDs then they are going to lose out to a lot of those people. I don't mind if you have to buy an external optical drive but it does have to be able to play Blu-rays and DVDs.

Not supporting Blu Ray worked out okay for the Xbox 360. Also pretty much every add on for a games console has failed such as the HD DVD add on for the 360 going all the way back to the Mega CD.

Agreed, Nintendo need more 3rd party support. This won't happen without better hardware. To be honest, I know Nintendo have stacks in the bank but they can't continue to support this current method.

I've not had a Nintendo console since the Gamecube. The Wii and Wii U don't appeal to me at all. Some of my fav games of all time were on Nintendo consoles but perhaps gaming has moved on and left Nintendo behind.

MORE AMIIBOS!
They're the best thing ever - you get to pay for DLC but get an amazing figurine AS WELL!

NINTENDO #1!

Without those the only thing left in Nintendo's business plan will be Amiibo... :)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I am not a console gamer, I game on PC.

HOWEVER, I have kids who SHOULD be their target audience but I as the one who makes the purchasing decision have not purchased their kit as I feel it is bad value for money.

Nintendo's loss, they have lost future customers. When people say "You are not their target customer", there are more connotations to that than one may initially think.

The tablet/controller/screen thing being required is stupid. Just seems like something expensive to break/go wrong?

I refuse to purchase a product which lets be honest, you purchase to then have the privilege to purchase games made by the same company, what a rip off.

Nintendo need to get into the 21st Century. Offer their back catalogue as a Netflix style streaming service, pull their head out of their ***, anything really just to see them do something right for gaming.

All I see from the WiiU at the moment (Please correct me if I am wrong) is an overpriced, first party and Indie console.

WiiU? More like posh Ouya :p
