Hey guys,

I'm trying to build a genuinely decent pc on a super tight budget. I am aiming for maximum value really!

I'm basically thinking secondhand only and have come up with the following so far.... :D

Power supply: some sort of budget corsair from years back, possibly 650w - £30
Cpu : perhaps an i7 920 as these are super cheap now, clock it to 3.8ghz - £20
Motherboard: hard to find, but perhaps a gigabyte x58, not cheap :/ - £60
Ram : ddr3 6gb : £30
Hdd : 1 tb : £30
Case : something decent with fans off the bay - £20
Graphics card : God, not sure on max value but maybe gtx 680? £75

Any suggestions for even better value in modern games guys? Any help very appreciated! :D it's a real shame about the high price on motherboards of this type but not sure of any better plans. Also, any other graphics cards ideas? I just can't help but think there must be some bits that I am overlooking.

Thanks for any help as I say ! :D

The only advice I have is please do not buy an old Corsair power supply. Get a decent new one for £30 more. It really isn't worth the risk

You can do cheap good PC's brand new these days. As much as you will save money doing some parts second hand I think your going to have issues finding the old premium boards.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 950 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £119.99
1 x Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £49.99
1 x Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD - OEM (ST1000DM003) £38.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TPKD38G1600HC11DC01) £38.99
1 x MSI H81M-E33 Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £34.99
1 x EVGA 430W 80 Plus Power Supply (100-W1-0430-KR) £28.99
1 x Cougar MX200 Midi-Tower Gaming Case - Black £19.99
Total : £331.93 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

X58 is a good path for a cheap but still pretty powerful setup. A few years ago I managed to pick up an i7 930, Asus p6 x58de mobo and 6gb of 1600mhz ram for £120.00. Stuff like this will be a fair bit cheaper now.

It all seems pretty sound to me. Might as well go visit the county tip while you're at it to scavenge even more components. Might be able to get a decent case that way.

I'm using one I found in a bin round the back of our apartments in my second pc :D

Still going strong after a year, 500w branded, its amazing what people throw away!

Yep. Whole PC's most often. Nobody should ever throw away ATX PSUs though. They're too valuable for all sort of stuff. Not to mention to swap with for debugging other possibly broken / failed PSUs.
